This short prayer is for the stretch of time when you are waiting: waiting on test results, a job decision, a phone call, a child to come home, an answer you cannot yet see. You can pray it at the moment the waiting feels heaviest, read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words to the things on your heart.

Short Prayer When You Are Waiting

Lord, I am waiting, and I do not like not knowing. My mind keeps running ahead to every possible outcome, and my body feels tight with it. I ask you to quiet the restless part of me and to remind me that you already know how this will unfold. You are not surprised by anything I am facing today.

Help me keep my hands open instead of clenched. When I check my phone again, when I rehearse the conversation I am dreading, when I imagine the worst, bring me back to you. Give me patience for the hours I cannot hurry, and steady me when the silence feels like abandonment. Let me rest in the truth that you are present in the waiting room, the hallway, and the long drive home.

I give you the outcome I am hoping for, and I also give you the outcome I am afraid of. Whatever comes, I ask that you walk through it with me. Teach me to trust your timing more than my own, and let this wait become a place where I learn to lean on you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am waiting, and my heart is anxious. Calm me now and hold this unknown in your hands. Help me take the next breath and then the one after that. I trust you with what I cannot control, and I ask you to be near me until I hear what comes next. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

When waiting turns into restlessness, this verse invites you to stop striving and simply acknowledge that God is God. Pray it slowly, letting each phrase slow your breathing and remind you that the outcome is not yours to force.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

This verse speaks directly to those who wait on the Lord. Pray it asking God to renew your strength for the days ahead, not just the moment, so that you can keep going without burning out.

Psalm 27:14

Wait for the LORD. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the LORD.

(WEB)

David ends this psalm by telling the reader to wait and be strong. Use it as a prayer for courage, asking God to give you a steady heart while you do the waiting you cannot skip.

Romans 8:25

But if we hope for that which we don’t see, we wait for it with patience.

(WEB)

Paul connects hope with waiting patiently for what we do not yet see. Pray this verse when your hope feels thin, asking God to strengthen the hope you have and to keep you faithful in the interval.

Lamentations 3:25-26

25 The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. 26 It is good that a man should hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.

(WEB)

These verses describe waiting quietly for the salvation of the Lord as something good. Pray them when waiting feels like a burden, asking God to help you find quiet in the wait rather than only dread.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a specific moment to pray the longer version, such as first thing in the morning before the day’s news arrives, or in the car before you walk into the appointment. If you are waiting in a place where you cannot speak aloud, pray the shorter version silently while you breathe slowly. Keeping your hands busy with something simple, like holding a cup of tea or a smooth stone in your pocket, can help the prayer settle into your body.

You do not have to carry this wait alone. Ask a friend, a spouse, or a small group to pray this prayer with you, or to pray it for you on the days you are too tired to find words. Let them know what you are waiting for, so they can pray with clarity and stay with you until there is news.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who sees the waiting keep your heart steady and your mind at rest. May he meet you in the quiet hours and give you strength for each step. Whatever answer comes, may you know that you were never waiting alone.
