Short prayers for a new baby are written for the early days, when you are tired, amazed and not sure what to say. Pray them in the first weeks at home, during a night feed, or at the bedside before you leave the hospital. You can read the prayer below word for word, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Short Prayers for a New Baby
Lord, thank you for this child. We did not earn this gift, and we are amazed that you trusted us with a life so small and so precious. Be near her in her sleep and in her waking, in every cry and every quiet moment. Guard her breathing, steady her heartbeat, and let her grow strong in body and in spirit. Give her a peaceful rest and a warm place to be held.
Father, we also ask for ourselves. We are tired, and some nights we feel unsure whether we are doing this right. Give us patience when the hours run long, wisdom when we cannot tell what she needs, and grace when we fall short. Help us to lean on you and on the people you have placed around us. Let our home be a place where she learns love before she learns words. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, you knew this child before she was formed, and you know her now. Keep her safe while she sleeps, and keep us awake to your nearness. Give us calm hands and a steady heart for whatever the next hour brings. Thank you for this gift. Amen.

This is the blessing of the Lord over his people. Speak it over your child as you hold her, asking God to bless, keep and be gracious to her.
How to Pray This Prayer
Many parents find that the night feed is the easiest time to pray. Your hands are busy and your mind is quiet, so you can say the words softly while the baby settles. Sit in a rocking chair or on the edge of the bed, and let the prayer slow your breathing as much as hers. If you are too tired to read, say one line and rest in it.
Invite someone else to pray it with you. A grandparent, a friend, or your partner can read the longer prayer aloud while you hold the baby. Praying together lifts some of the weight, and it reminds you that you are not raising this child alone.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless you and keep you through these first weeks and months. May he give you rest where you need it, strength where you lack it, and joy in the small moments. May your child grow up knowing she is loved by God and by the family that holds her now.
