This page offers short prayers for baby dedications, written for parents, grandparents, godparents and church families who want to bring a child before God with simple, sincere words. Pray the prayer below as written, read it aloud in the days before the service, or use it as a starting point and put your own hopes into your own language.

Short Prayers for Baby Dedications

Lord, you knew this child before there was any sound in the house, before the first cry, before the first sleepless night. Today we give this little one back to you, not because we own them, but because you gave them to us as a trust. Thank you for the gift of a healthy body, for small hands that grip our fingers, and for the wonder that fills a room when a baby sleeps.

We ask you to be the first voice this child learns to trust. Help us to teach them about your love by how we love them, how we forgive, how we keep our promises and how we keep showing up. Give us patience when we are tired, wisdom when we don’t know what to do, and humility to ask for help. Surround this child with people who will point them toward you.

Father, guard their days and nights and draw their heart to you from the very beginning. When they grow and begin to ask their own questions, let them find you faithful. We place our child in your care, trusting you with the future we cannot see. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, thank you for this child. We give them back to you today and ask you to hold them close. Teach us to love them the way you love us, and make us a home where your goodness is known. Keep them safe, help them grow strong in body and spirit, and let them always know they belong to you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 127:3

Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a reminder that children are a gift from the Lord, not a possession to be controlled. Thank God for this child by name and ask him to help you receive them as a blessing entrusted to your care.

Mark 10:14

But when Jesus saw it, he was moved with indignation, and said to them, “Allow the little children to come to me! Don’t forbid them, for God’s Kingdom belongs to such as these.

(WEB)

Jesus welcomed children when others wanted to push them aside. Pray that this child will always be welcomed in the presence of Jesus, and that your church and family will make room for them too.

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

(WEB)

This proverb speaks to the long road of parenting and teaching. Ask God to shape your child’s heart over many years, and to give you the daily faithfulness that such training requires.

Numbers 6:24-26

24 ‘The LORD bless you, and keep you. 25 The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. 26 The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

(WEB)

This is the ancient blessing God gave Moses for the priests to speak over his people. Pray these words aloud over your child, asking the Lord to bless, keep, favor and give peace to them all their days.

Isaiah 40:11

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.

(WEB)

Here God is pictured as a shepherd who gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close. Pray that this child will always know the gentle, strong care of God, especially on the nights when a parent cannot be there.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time, such as the evening after a feeding or the morning before the household wakes. Sit or kneel near the crib or where the child usually rests, and rest a hand gently on them if they are sleeping or on your own heart if they are awake. Speaking slowly helps you mean every word.

Invite others to join you. A grandparent, a spouse, a godparent or a friend can each pray one of the paragraphs, or simply say “Amen” at the end. Many families keep a copy of the prayer in the baby’s room or in a family Bible so it can be read again on birthdays and hard days.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this little one and keep them under his watchful care. May his face shine upon them with kindness, and may they grow up knowing they are deeply loved. May the people around them point them toward Jesus all their days.
