These short prayers for expectant mothers are written for the months of pregnancy, the long nights before a scan, and the quiet moments before labor begins. You can pray them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and put your own words in where your heart is fuller than the page. They work well in the morning before the day starts, at bedtime with a hand resting on your belly, or in a waiting room while you wait for news.

Short Prayers for Expectant Mothers

Lord, you knew this child before I knew I was carrying them. I thank you for the life growing inside me, and I ask you to hold us both through every hour of these months. Some days I feel strong and full of hope. Other days I am tired, scared of what I cannot control, and unsure whether I am doing this right. Be near to me in those days. Steady my breathing when the fear rises, and remind me that I am not carrying this alone.

I pray for my baby’s health, from the smallest heartbeat to the last week before birth. Guard every stage of development, and let my body do the work it was made to do. Give my doctors and midwives wisdom and care, and give me the grace to ask my questions without shame. Prepare my heart for labor and delivery, whatever that day looks like, and give us both safe passage into the arms of the people who will love this child. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am carrying a child, and I am asking you to carry us both. Calm my fears and steady my body. Keep my baby safe, and give me peace for the next hour and the next day. Thank you for this life and for your nearness in every ordinary moment of this season. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 139:13-14

13 For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.

Read this slowly with your hand on your belly. Thank God that the child you carry was formed with care and intention, and let that truth replace the worry that asks whether everything is going right.

Isaiah 46:4

Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel worn down by the weight of pregnancy. Ask God to carry you the way he has promised to carry his people from the beginning to the end of their lives.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

When the list of what could go wrong keeps growing, turn each worry into a specific request. Then receive the peace this passage promises, which guards the heart when your thoughts are racing.

Psalm 127:3

Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

(WEB)

Let this verse shape your gratitude. Name the child you are expecting as a gift from the Lord, and thank him for entrusting this life to you during this season.

Luke 1:45

Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord!”

(WEB)

Elizabeth spoke these words to Mary, and you can pray them over yourself. Ask God to help you believe that what he has promised will be fulfilled, even when you cannot yet see how.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time that is already part of your day, such as after your morning coffee, during a lunch break, or just before you fall asleep. Sit or lie somewhere comfortable, and rest one hand on your belly or on your heart. Read the prayer slowly, pausing at the line that stirs you most, and let that pause become part of your prayer. Many mothers find it helpful to pray with a partner or a friend, taking turns reading the lines aloud.

If you are anxious or unable to focus, pray the shorter version instead. You can also invite someone you trust to pray this over you, whether a spouse, a sister, your pastor, or a friend from church. Their voice speaking your needs before God can be a comfort on the days when your own words feel thin.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who knit this child together keep mother and baby in his care. May he steady you in the hard hours and fill you with a peace that does not depend on how the next appointment goes. May you feel his nearness in every quiet moment until you hold your child in your arms.
