This page offers short prayers for the start of a new job, meant for the days before you walk through the door, your first morning, or the drive home after a long day of learning names and passwords. Read the prayer aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words around it. Either way, it is a way to bring your nerves, hopes and questions to God before you ask anyone else for help.

Short Prayers for the Start of a New Job

Lord, you know the knot in my stomach this morning. I am walking into a place where people already know their way around, and I am still learning where the coffee is kept and who to ask about the printer. Give me a calm mind when I feel behind, and help me remember that you have not called me to know everything on day one. Let me listen more than I talk, and let me ask questions without shame.

Father, go before me into this workplace. Put a kind colleague in my path, and let my manager be patient with the mistakes I will certainly make. Keep my hands steady with the new tasks and my tongue careful with the new faces. Where I am tempted to compare myself to everyone around me, remind me that the work you have given me is mine to do, and that you are not surprised by where I am starting. Help me to do this work with integrity, even when no one is watching closely.

Thank you for going with me into this new season. Whatever happens in these first weeks, let me see you at work in ordinary moments, in a helpful email, a good lunch conversation, or a problem finally solved. Guide my decisions, guard my heart, and let me leave each day a little more grateful than I arrived. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am nervous and I do not know what today will bring. Steady me, show me what to do next, and give me grace for the people I meet. Help me be honest when I do not know and humble when I am corrected. Go with me into this work, and let me trust you with the parts I cannot control. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel lost about how the job works. Ask God to make your path clear one step at a time, instead of expecting the whole plan to appear on the first morning.

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this as you leave home and walk into the building. It reminds you that God watches over your coming and going, the commute, the first meeting, and the drive home.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this when you are tempted to do only the minimum or to chase approval. Ask God to help you work for him, so that your effort rests on something more lasting than a supervisor’s opinion.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this when worry about performance keeps you awake. Bring each specific concern to God in prayer, and ask for the peace that guards the heart and mind when anxiety starts to rise.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Pray this whenever you face a decision you have never made before. Ask God for wisdom, trusting that he gives generously and does not scold you for not already knowing the answer.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the main prayer in the car before you go in, or at your desk before the first meeting starts. If you can, keep a small card or a note on your phone with the shorter version, and read it during a break in the bathroom or at the coffee station. Pressing your feet flat on the floor and taking a slow breath between sentences can help the words land more gently.

You might also ask a trusted friend, a spouse, or a small group at church to pray this with you for the first month. Let them know the specific things you are worried about, such as the new software, the team dynamics, or the pay schedule, so their prayers can be as concrete as yours. Return to the prayer at the end of your first week and again at the end of your first month, and notice what God has already answered.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before this new worker and walk beside them through every unfamiliar hallway and hard conversation. May they find colleagues who are generous with their time, and may their work be a quiet witness of faithfulness. May they rest in the knowledge that they were placed here on purpose, and may peace settle over them each evening as they go home.
