This simple prayer for my decisions is for the moments when you have to choose and cannot see the whole path ahead. It works well first thing in the morning, before a meeting, or in the car before a hard phone call, and you can read it aloud exactly as written or use it as a starting point for words of your own.
Simple Prayer for My Decisions
Father, you already know what is on my mind today. There is the job offer I cannot stop turning over, the bills that make every option feel tight, and the people who will be affected by whatever I choose. I do not want to decide out of fear or out of pressure from others. I want to decide with a clear head and an honest heart.
Lord, give me wisdom that goes beyond what I can work out on my own. Show me what is true about each option, and help me notice the motives that are pushing me, whether pride, worry, or the wish to please people. Quiet the noise so I can hear you. If one path is wrong for me, close that door gently, and if another is right, give me the courage to walk through it even when it is hard.
I also ask for peace after I have chosen. Help me trust that you will be with me in the outcome, whatever it turns out to be, and that my worth does not rise or fall with one decision. Thank you for hearing me. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I have a decision in front of me and I need your wisdom now. Show me what is true, free me from fear and from the need to impress anyone, and make the next step clear. Give me peace whichever way I go, because I know you are with me. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
James 1:5
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.
(WEB)
Pray this verse by naming the specific choice in front of you and asking God to give wisdom freely, without holding back. It reminds you that asking for wisdom is itself a way of trusting him.
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
(WEB)
Read this slowly and notice the contrast between leaning on your own understanding and trusting the Lord with all your heart. Pray that God would straighten the path where your own reasoning has gotten crooked.
Psalm 32:8
I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.
(WEB)
Turn this promise into a prayer by asking God to guide you with his eye, not only with instructions. Ask him to keep you close enough to notice his direction as the decision unfolds.
Isaiah 30:21
And when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”
(WEB)
Pray for the ear to hear God’s voice when the way turns unclear. Ask him to speak in a way you can recognize, and to give you patience to wait for that word before you move.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Bring your anxiety about the decision into prayer, one concern at a time, and thank God for what he has already done. Ask that his peace would guard your heart and your thoughts while you decide.
How to Pray This Prayer
Try praying it early in the day, before the messages and obligations start pulling your attention. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of coffee or a glass of water in your hands, and read the prayer slowly enough that each sentence has time to land. If your decision is written down on paper, place it in front of you so the words and the choice stay connected.
You might also ask a trusted friend, your spouse, or a small group to pray the same prayer for you while you are deciding. Let them know what the decision is and when you expect to make it. Having others carry it with you can ease the sense that everything rests on your shoulders alone.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord give wisdom to the one who is seeking it today. May he guide each step with patience and steady light, and may his peace settle the heart that is weighing so many things. Whatever choice is made, may it be held in the grace of God, who keeps watch over every path.
