This is an evening prayer for your pastor, written to be prayed at the end of the day when the sermons are preached, the calls are returned and the hard conversations are finally over. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and pray in your own words. Either way, it asks God to care for the one who cares for your church.

Evening Prayer for My Pastor

Lord, as this day comes to an end, I bring my pastor before You. You know the weight they carried today: the messages they prepared, the people they visited, the phone calls that came at inconvenient hours, and the questions they could not answer. Thank You for the way they have given their time and attention to our church. Please receive their efforts as an offering, even the ones that felt small or went unnoticed.

Now let them rest. Quiet the thoughts that keep circling back to unfinished work and people they worry about. Remind them that the church belongs to You, and that You are able to do far more than any one person could plan or carry. Give them sleep that restores body and mind, and wake them tomorrow with fresh strength and a clear sense of Your direction.

Guard their family tonight, and guard their heart. Protect them from discouragement, from loneliness, and from the quiet temptation to believe that everything depends on them. Surround them with people who pray for them and speak truth into their life. Keep them close to You through the night. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, thank You for my pastor and for the faithful way they serve us. Give them rest tonight, lift the burdens they could not set down today, and keep their family safe. Let them wake refreshed and ready to hear from You again. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of God giving rest to those He loves, even when work continues. Pray it as a reminder that your pastor does not have to earn sleep through constant effort, and ask God to give them rest that comes as a gift.

Hebrews 13:17

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch on behalf of your souls, as those who will give account, that they may do this with joy, and not with groaning, for that would be unprofitable for you.

(WEB)

This passage describes pastors as those who keep watch over souls and will give an account. Pray it for your pastor’s sense of calling, that they would carry the work with joy rather than dread.

Ephesians 6:18

With all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit, and being watchful to this end in all perseverance and requests for all the saints…

(WEB)

Paul urges believers to pray at all times and for all the saints. Use this verse to ask that the church would pray for your pastor consistently, not only when a crisis arises.

Philippians 1:3-4

3 I thank my God whenever I remember you, 4 always in every request of mine on behalf of you all, making my requests with joy…

(WEB)

Paul gives thanks for his partners in the gospel and prays for them with joy. Pray these words as thanks to God for your pastor, and ask that your pastor would also know the joy of seeing God’s work in the people they serve.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

The psalmist declares that the Lord keeps His people from harm as they go out and come in. Pray this over your pastor’s coming and going, asking God to watch over them through the night and into the new day.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer in the evening, once the day’s responsibilities are behind you and before you go to bed. A quiet chair, a lamp, or a spot near a window works well. You might hold a pen and write your pastor’s name on a card, or simply rest your hands open in your lap as a sign of entrusting them to God.

If you live with others, consider praying it together at the dinner table or before bed, with a spouse, child, or small group. You might also share the prayer with other members of your church so that many people lift your pastor up each night. Being part of that quiet chain of prayer encourages both you and the one being prayed for.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your pastor and keep them, may He make His face shine upon them and give them peace. May they rest well tonight and rise tomorrow strengthened by His grace, knowing they are loved by the people they serve.
