This lesson teaches children that God is a good Shepherd who gathers His people, brings them home, and makes them strong. It is designed for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.
Big Idea
God is like a good shepherd. He takes care of His people, brings them home, and makes them strong when they trust Him.
Memory Verse
Zechariah 10:1
Ask of the LORD rain in the spring time, the LORD who makes storm clouds, and he gives rain showers to everyone for the plants in the field.
(WEB)
Ask children to cup their hands together, as if holding rain, and then slowly wiggle their fingers downward like raindrops falling. Each time they do it, remind them that the Lord gives good things to everyone, just like rain helps the plants grow.
The Story: Zechariah 10 for Kids
A long time ago, God’s people, the family of Judah, were lost and worried. They had no good leader to guide them, so they wandered like sheep without a shepherd. Some people told them false stories and made promises that were not true. The people felt scared and did not know who to trust.
God was not happy with the leaders who had led His people the wrong way. He said that He would take care of His flock Himself. God told them that He would make Judah strong, like a fine horse ready for battle. He said that the people would stand firm, and that even the strongest enemies would not defeat them, because God was with them.
God also promised to bring His people home. Some of them were far away, scattered in many countries, and some had even been taken to Egypt and Assyria. God said, “I will gather them, because I have redeemed them.” He would bring them back to the land they loved, to Gilead and Lebanon, and there would be plenty of room for everyone.
Even the big obstacles in their way would not stop God. He promised to dry up the deep waters and push down the pride of the nations who had hurt His people. God said that He would strengthen His people, and they would walk in His name. The people learned that God keeps every promise He makes.
Read It Together
Zechariah 10:3
My anger is kindled against the shepherds, and I will punish the male goats; For the LORD of Armies has visited his flock, the house of Judah, and will make them as his majestic horse in the battle.
(WEB)
Point out that God describes Himself as the one who visits His flock. Explain that a shepherd checks on his sheep, and God checks on His people in the same caring way.
Zechariah 10:6
“I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will bring them back; for I have mercy on them; and they will be as though I had not cast them off: for I am the LORD their God, and I will hear them.
(WEB)
Show children the words about God having mercy and hearing His people. Explain that God listens when His children call to Him, and He cares about how they feel.
Zechariah 10:12
I will strengthen them in the LORD; and they will walk up and down in his name,” says the LORD.
(WEB)
Point out the word “strengthen.” Ask children how God helps them be strong, and remind them that walking in God’s name means living close to Him each day.
Talk About It
- What does it feel like to be lost, and how do you think God’s people felt when they had no shepherd?
- Why do you think God says He is like a shepherd who takes care of His sheep?
- Who are some people in your life who help take care of you the way a shepherd takes care of sheep?
- How can you tell that God keeps His promises?
- What is one way you can trust God when you feel scared?
Activity Ideas
Paper Sheep Craft
You will need cotton balls, paper plates, glue, black construction paper, and crayons. Have each child glue cotton balls onto a paper plate to make a fluffy sheep body, then add a black paper head and legs. As they work, talk about how God, the good Shepherd, takes care of each of His sheep by name.
Shepherd and Sheep Game
Choose one child to be the shepherd and the rest to be sheep. The shepherd stands in the middle of the room while the sheep wander around. When the shepherd calls, “Come home,” the sheep must run back and gather close. Explain that God calls His people home in the same way.
Take-Home Promise Card
You will need index cards, markers, and a small piece of string or ribbon. Help each child write or draw a picture of God as their shepherd on one side of the card. On the other side, they can write “God keeps His promises.” Punch a hole at the top, add the string, and encourage them to hang it near their bed as a reminder.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows that God is faithful to gather and restore His people, even after they have wandered far away. It also shows that He judges false leaders and offers true care to those who trust Him. The picture of God as a shepherd and the promise of strength in Him are at the heart of the message.
When teaching children, avoid overstating the historical details or trying to explain every symbol in the chapter. Children grasp God’s care and faithfulness best through simple, clear truths. Keep the focus on God’s kindness and His promise to bring His people home.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You for being our good Shepherd. Thank You for caring for us, listening to us, and bringing us home. Help us to trust You every day and to walk close to You. We love You. Amen.
