Big Idea
God is with us, He is strong enough to keep us safe, and He sings happy songs over us because He loves us very much.
Memory Verse
Zephaniah 3:17
The LORD, your God, is among you, a mighty one who will save. He will rejoice over you with joy. He will calm you in his love. He will rejoice over you with singing.

Cup both hands together like you are holding a little bird. Lift them up slowly as you say, “The Lord is with me.” Then spread your arms wide and say, “He sings over me!” Repeat the motions three times so the children remember the words.
The Story: Zephaniah 3 for Kids
Long ago, the prophet Zephaniah lived in Jerusalem. The city had become wicked. The leaders were like roaring lions, and the judges were like hungry wolves. People did not listen to God, and they did not want to be corrected. They did not trust the Lord or come close to Him.
God was not happy with this. He is always fair, and He always does what is right. Every morning, He brought His justice into the light, so everyone could see it. God told the people that He had punished other nations for their sins, and He warned Jerusalem that it was time to listen. He said, “Just fear me and receive correction.” But the people got up early and kept doing wrong things.
Zephaniah also told of a day when God would make things new. He would purify the lips of the people, so they could all call on His name together. Some of the people who were poor, hurt, and afraid would find safety in the Lord. They would not lie or cheat anymore. They would lie down in peace, and nobody would frighten them.
Then the prophet called out a happy message. “Sing, daughter of Zion! Shout, Israel! Be glad with all your heart!” The reason for the joy was that God had taken away their troubles and pushed their enemies away. The King of Israel, the Lord Himself, was right there among them. God told His people, “Do not be afraid. Do not let your hands go weak.”
God promised that He would gather the people who had been scattered and make their shame turn into praise. He said He would bring them home and give them honor among all the nations of the earth. The Lord said these words because He loves His people and keeps His promises.
Read It Together
Zephaniah 3:1-2
1 Woe to her who is rebellious and polluted, the oppressing city! 2 She didn’t obey the voice. She didn’t receive correction. She didn’t trust in the LORD. She didn’t draw near to her God.

Point out that the people did not listen to God, trust Him, or come close to Him. Ask the children what it means to listen to a parent or teacher. Explain that God wanted the people to listen so they could be safe and happy.
Zephaniah 3:12-13
12 But I will leave among you an afflicted and poor people, and they will take refuge in the LORD’s name. 13 The remnant of Israel will not do iniquity, nor speak lies, neither will a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth, for they will feed and lie down, and no one will make them afraid.”

Show the children that God promised to leave a humble, poor people who would trust Him. Explain that these people would take refuge in His name, which means they would find safety with Him. Help them see that God cares most for those who need Him.
Zephaniah 3:19-20
19 Behold, at that time I will deal with all those who afflict you, and I will save those who are lame, and gather those who were driven away. I will give them praise and honor, whose shame has been in all the earth. 20 At that time will I bring you in, and at that time will I gather you; for I will give you honor and praise among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes, says the LORD.

Point out that God said He would bring His people home and give them praise. Remind the children that God does not forget people who feel left out or hurt. He is faithful and keeps every promise He makes.
Talk About It
- What did the people of Jerusalem do that made God sad?
- How can we show that we trust God when we feel scared?
- Why do you think God wanted to protect the poor and hurting people?
- What does it feel like to know that God is always with you?
- What is one way we can sing or shout happy songs to God this week?
Activity Ideas
Paper Bird Drawing
You will need paper, crayons, and safety scissors. Have each child trace their hand on the paper and cut it out, then draw a bird on top of the hand shape. Talk about how God holds us close like a bird in its nest. Ask the children to write or draw one thing that makes them feel safe.
Shout and Sing Game
Gather the children in an open space and have them stand together. Call out “Sing!” and let them sing a short song, then call out “Shout!” and have them cheer loudly. Finish by calling “Be glad!” and have them raise their arms and smile. Explain that these are the same joyful words Zephaniah used to call the people to celebrate God.
Take-Home Reminder Card
You will need index cards, markers, and a pencil. Write the words “The Lord is with me” on each card and let the children decorate the border with stickers or drawings. Encourage them to place the card on their bed or by the front door. Ask them to read it aloud each morning as a reminder of God’s constant presence.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Zephaniah 3 shows that God is both just and merciful. He judges sin and corruption, but He also promises to save the humble, restore the scattered, and rejoice over His people with love. The chapter moves from warning to joy, reminding readers that God’s justice and kindness work together.
When teaching children, avoid overstating the idea of judgment or fear. Keep the focus on God’s love, His faithfulness, and the joy He shares with His people. Children should leave knowing that God is near and cares for them, not feeling anxious about punishment.
A Prayer to Close
Lord, we thank You that You are with us and You are strong enough to keep us safe. Help us listen to You, trust You, and come close to You every day. Thank You for singing over us with love and for making us glad. Help us to share that joy with our friends and family. Amen.
