Genesis 24 teaches children that God guides His people even in ordinary, everyday decisions, and that He answers prayer when we trust Him. This lesson suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God leads the people who trust Him, and He answers when we pray. A servant asked God for help, and God showed him the right girl for the job.

Memory Verse

Genesis 24:27

He said, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken his loving kindness and his truth toward my master. As for me, the LORD has led me on the way to the house of my master’s relatives.”

Have the children hold both hands out in front of them, then slowly lift them up together as if they are offering a gift to God. As you say “the LORD has led me,” have them point forward, like someone walking down a road God chose for them.

The Story: Genesis 24 for Kids

Abraham was very old, and he had a son named Isaac. Abraham wanted Isaac to marry a good woman, but he did not want him to marry a woman from the people who lived nearby. So Abraham called his most trusted servant and made him promise to go back to Abraham’s own family to find a wife for Isaac.

The servant packed ten camels with good things and traveled a long way to the city of Nahor. When he arrived, he stopped outside the city by a well in the evening. This was the time when the women came out to draw water. The servant prayed, “Lord, God of my master Abraham, please show me the right girl today.”

Before the servant even finished praying, a young woman named Rebekah came to the well with a jar on her shoulder. The servant asked her for a drink of water. Rebekah said, “Drink, sir, and I will also give water to your camels.” Camels can drink a lot of water, so this was a kind and hard-working thing to do.

The servant knew this was the answer to his prayer. He gave Rebekah gold jewelry and then asked her whose daughter she was. When she told him her family, he bowed down and thanked God for leading him on the right road. Rebekah ran home to tell her family what had happened.

Her family saw the gifts and heard the story, and they agreed that this was God’s plan. They asked Rebekah if she wanted to go with the servant, and she said, “I will go.” So Rebekah left her home to become Isaac’s wife, and the servant brought her safely back to Abraham’s land.

Read It Together

Genesis 24:12-14

12 He said, “The LORD, the God of my master Abraham, please give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 13 Behold, I am standing by the spring of water. The daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. 14 Let it happen, that the young lady to whom I will say, ‘Please let down your pitcher, that I may drink,’ and she will say, ‘Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink,’—let her be the one you have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.”

Point out how the servant asked God for a clear sign and trusted Him with the details. Ask the children what they think the servant was feeling as he waited by the well.

Genesis 24:15-16

15 Before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, with her pitcher on her shoulder. 16 The young lady was very beautiful to look at, a virgin. No man had known her. She went down to the spring, filled her pitcher, and came up.

Show the children how God answered the prayer before the servant had even finished. Explain that God knows our needs and can answer quickly, even when we do not expect it.

Genesis 24:58

They called Rebekah, and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” She said, “I will go.”

Highlight Rebekah’s simple, brave answer, “I will go.” Point out that she trusted what her family had seen as God’s plan, and ask the children when they might need that same courage.

Talk About It

  • What did the servant ask God to do before he met Rebekah?
  • How do you think the servant felt when Rebekah answered his prayer exactly the way he hoped?
  • What kind things did Rebekah do for the servant and his camels?
  • How can we show God that we trust Him to lead us in our day?
  • What is one decision you might ask God about this week?

Activity Ideas

Draw the Well Scene

Give each child a sheet of paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask them to draw the well outside the city, with the camels resting nearby and Rebekah carrying her jar. Encourage them to draw the servant with his hands folded in prayer. Hang the pictures on the wall so the children can point to them when you retell the story.

Follow the Leader Road

Set up a simple path of chairs or tape on the floor to make a winding road. Have one child be the servant and walk slowly along the path while the others gently guide them with hand signals. Remind the children that God is the true leader, and the servant trusted Him to show the way. Switch leaders so every child gets a turn.

Water Blessing Card

Cut heart shapes from construction paper and have the children write or draw one way they can show kindness this week, like Rebekah did. Provide a small cup for each child to decorate. Send the card and cup home so the family can talk about it together during dinner or bedtime.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Genesis 24 shows that God guides His people in practical matters, not only in big moments. The servant prayed specifically, watched carefully, and waited for God to answer before acting. The chapter also reminds us that God works through the choices and kindness of ordinary people, like Rebekah, and that He can bring about His purposes through them.

Avoid telling children that God will always give them exactly what they ask for in the way they expect. The servant’s prayer was answered in a particular situation, and children should learn to trust God’s wisdom even when His answer looks different from what they had in mind.

A Prayer to Close

Lord, thank You for leading us every day. Help us to pray and trust You, like the servant did, and to be kind like Rebekah. Show us the right way to go, and help us follow You. Amen.
