This Christian prayer for the sick is written for anyone who is ill, for a family member lying in a hospital bed, or for a friend waiting on test results. Pray it when fear is loud and the body feels weak, in the early morning, at a bedside, or in the quiet of a long night. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words from the same heart.

Christian Prayer for the Sick

Lord, you see this body that aches and this person who is tired of being tired. You know the medications, the blood work, the phone calls to the doctor, and the questions nobody can answer yet. Be near to the one who is sick today. Steady the breathing, ease the pain where you choose to ease it, and give rest to the eyes that cannot sleep. Let the nurses, doctors and caregivers be wise and patient, and let their hands be gentle.

Father, when the diagnosis is frightening, remind us that you have not stepped back from this moment. Quiet the racing thoughts about what might happen next, and turn them toward what is true about you. Give courage to the one who is suffering and peace to the people who love them. If healing comes, receive it with thanksgiving. If the road is longer than we want, carry us through it and do not let us walk it alone. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I bring this illness to you right now. You know every symptom and every fear. Be close to the one who is sick, give strength where strength is gone, and give peace where worry has taken over. Guide the doctors and the people who care for them, and let your presence be the calm in this room. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 41:3

The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed, and restore him from his bed of illness.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over the sick person in plain words, asking God to be their support on the bed of pain and to turn the sickness into a season where they feel his nearness. It is a good verse to speak slowly while sitting beside them.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Use this verse when fear is the main burden. Name the specific fears out loud, then ask God to be the one who strengthens and holds up the sick person through each hour.

James 5:14-15

14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, 15 and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

(WEB)

This passage reminds the church to pray together and to call on others for help. Ask God to bring the right people to the sick person, whether elders, friends, or family, and to answer the prayer offered in faith.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the broken places, both in the body and in the heart. Ask God to be the one who binds up what hurts, and to tend the emotional wounds that often come with long illness.

Jeremiah 17:14

Heal me, O the LORD, and I will be healed. Save me, and I will be saved; for you are my praise.

(WEB)

Jeremiah cried out to God for healing and trusted him to answer. Bring the same honest request before God, asking him to heal and save the sick person in his own good timing.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time, such as first thing in the morning or just before bed, when the house is still and the phone is out of reach. Sit close to the sick person if you can, and hold a hand or rest a palm on their shoulder while you pray. Keeping a hand on the person helps the prayer feel personal, and it gives your own hands something to do besides worry.

If you cannot be there in person, pray with a written note, a photo, or a phone call that you end with the prayer. Invite a friend, a pastor, or a church group to pray the same words on the same day, so the sick person knows that many people are lifting them up together.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless the one who is sick and keep them in his care. May he be gracious to them, lift their spirits, and give them rest that refreshes body and soul. May the people who love them be surrounded by his peace, and may every hour be held in his faithful hands.
