This is a Christian prayer for children’s friendships, written for parents, grandparents, teachers and anyone who loves a child and wants to bring their relationships with other kids before God. You can pray it at bedtime, on the drive to school, or in the quiet moment after a hard playdate. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak more plainly in your own words.

Christian Prayer for Children’s Friendships

Lord, you know every child by name, and you know the friends they are making and the friends they are losing. We bring the friendships of our children to you today. Some days they come home lighthearted, and some days they come home quiet, with a question about why a certain friend didn’t sit with them at lunch. Give them wisdom to read those moments rightly, and give us patience to listen without rushing to fix everything.

Help our child to be a good friend. Teach them to be kind when it is easy and kind when it is hard, to share what they have, to notice the child standing alone, and to tell the truth even when a friend would rather hear something else. Where they are tempted to follow the crowd into unkindness, give them the courage to step back. Where they feel left out, remind them that they are never forgotten by you, and give them a friend who will be loyal to them.

We ask you to go ahead of them into every classroom, playground, team and group chat. Surround them with children who will build them up, and protect them from anyone who would hurt them. Give us, as parents, the grace to guide without controlling and to trust you with the outcomes we cannot see. Keep our child’s heart tender toward others and steady in you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my child is working out friendships today, and I don’t have all the answers. Give them a kind heart and a brave voice. Show them who to trust and how to be trustworthy in return. Surround them with friends who love you and who love them well. Protect them where they feel exposed, and comfort them where they feel left out. Thank you that you are with them in every hallway and every playground. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 17:17

A friend loves at all times; and a brother is born for adversity.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for your child by asking God to show them what real loyalty looks like. Ask him to help them love a friend in good times and in bad, and to draw them toward friends who will stay with them through the hard seasons.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

Use this passage to thank God that he designed people to need one another. Pray that your child will find a companion who helps them up when they stumble, and that they will be that kind of helper to someone else.

Philippians 2:3-4

3 Doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; 4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

(WEB)

Pray that your child will learn to look beyond their own wants and notice what matters to their friends. Ask God to make them humble in conflict and generous in play, so that friendships grow out of care rather than competition.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; 6 doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

(WEB)

Let this passage shape your prayer for patience and gentleness in your child’s friendships. Ask God to help them bear with others, keep no record of small wrongs, and believe the best about their friends wherever it is honest to do so.

Colossians 3:12-13

12 Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Pray that your child will clothe themselves with compassion and forgiveness. Ask God to make them quick to forgive when a friend hurts them and quick to say sorry when they are the one who has gotten it wrong.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time that already belongs to your child, such as the minute after school when they climb into the car, or the few quiet moments at bedtime. You might rest a hand on their shoulder or the top of their head while you pray, or hold their hand if they are willing. Children often open up more readily when the words are spoken gently and without a lecture attached.

You can also pray this with a grandparent, a teacher, a youth leader or another family from your church. Ask them to hold your child’s friendships in their own prayers during the week. Writing the prayer on a card and keeping it in a school bag or on the fridge can help you return to it on days when the friendship news feels heavy.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before them and walk beside them in every friendship they form. May he give them a heart that is kind, a voice that is honest, and friends who love them for who they are. May they know, even on lonely days, that they are deeply known and dearly loved by God.
