This prayer is for the times when your parents are unwell, facing a diagnosis, recovering from surgery, or simply growing older and more fragile than you would like. You can pray it in the morning before the day’s appointments, in the car on the way to a hospital, or late at night when worry keeps you awake. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words into each line.

Prayer for My Parents’ Health

Father, you are the one who formed my mother and father and knit them together in their mothers’ wombs. Today I bring their bodies to you, with every ache, every test result I am waiting for, and every medication that seems to take more than it gives back. You see the pain they do not mention, the fear they try to hide from me, and the tiredness that settles into their bones. Give them restful sleep, steady hands and feet, and a strength that comes from you when their own strength runs out.

Be with the doctors, nurses, and caregivers who look after them. Give wisdom to those making decisions about treatment, and give my parents the patience to endure what is hard and the honesty to ask for help when they need it. Where healing is your will, let it come quickly and completely. Where the road is long, keep them company on it and keep me from carrying more than I was meant to carry. Let them feel your nearness in quiet rooms and long nights, and let me trust that you hold them even when I cannot. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, you know exactly how my mother and father are feeling right now. I ask for healing where it is needed, comfort where it is not yet possible, and peace for both of them and for me. Steady their hearts, guard their minds, and remind them that they are not alone in this. Thank you that you are near to the sick and the weary. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 103:2-3

2 Praise the LORD, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits; 3 who forgives all your sins; who heals all your diseases…

(WEB)

Use this passage to thank God for every good thing he has already done for your parents, including the healing they have received in the past. Naming those mercies out loud can steady your heart before you ask for what is still needed.

Jeremiah 17:14

Heal me, O the LORD, and I will be healed. Save me, and I will be saved; for you are my praise.

(WEB)

Pray this as a direct request, asking God to heal your mother or father in the way only he can. It gives you honest words for the desperation you may feel when medicine seems to have reached its limit.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Ask God to give your parents strength when their bodies feel weak and their spirits feel low. This verse is especially useful for recovery seasons, when progress is slow and encouragement is needed.

Psalm 41:3

The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed, and restore him from his bed of illness.

(WEB)

Speak this over your parents on the days when they are confined to a bed or a chair. It reminds you that God attends to the sick, sustaining them and restoring them in ways you may not yet be able to see.

James 5:15

And the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

(WEB)

Pray this verse with faith and humility, trusting God with the outcome while asking him to heal and restore. It also reminds you that prayer is a shared work, and that others in your church or family can join you in asking.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time of day that is yours alone, such as early morning with a cup of coffee or the few minutes before you walk into your parents’ house. Keep a pen nearby so you can write down any test results, appointment dates, or specific fears you want to bring back to God later. Holding a photograph of your parents or a small object that reminds you of them can keep your attention focused when your mind starts to wander.

Invite someone else to pray this with you, whether a sibling, a close friend, or a member of your small group. Ask them to pray for your parents by name and to check in with you during hard weeks. Sharing the burden in this way often makes the waiting feel less lonely and gives you someone to rejoice with when good news arrives.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your parents and keep them, may his face shine upon them and give them peace. May he surround them with strength for each day and hope for each night. May he sustain you as you love and care for them, and may you rest in his faithful hands.
