These prayers are written for grieving families, for the days after a death when words feel scarce and the house feels too quiet. You can pray them aloud as written, at a kitchen table, beside a bed, or in the car before you walk into a room of people you love. You can also use them as a starting point and speak your own sorrow in your own words.

Prayers for Grieving Families

Lord, our family is grieving, and we do not know how to carry this. The chair at the table is empty, the phone still has their number, and every ordinary task brings the loss back to the surface. We ask you to come close to each of us, to the ones who cry openly and the ones who cannot cry yet, to the ones who keep busy so they do not have to sit still. Meet us in the mornings when we wake up and forget for one second, and then remember all over again.

Father, we ask for comfort that is real and not just a polite word from friends. Be the steady presence in the hospital hallway, the funeral home, the long phone calls, and the nights when sleep will not come. Strengthen the ones who must make arrangements, sign papers and answer questions while their hearts are breaking. Gather us together without forcing us to pretend, and give us patience with one another when grief makes us short, forgetful or angry. Hold the children, the older ones, and the friends who loved them too. Keep our faith from being crushed by this loss, and let us lean on you when we cannot stand on our own. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, we are hurting and we need you right now. Be near to our family in this moment, steady our breathing, and quiet the fear that rises in us. Hold the ones who are weakest and help the strongest among us to rest. Remind us that you have not left us, even when the loss feels too heavy to bear. We trust you with the person we miss and with the days ahead. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the family members whose hearts feel shattered. Ask God to draw close to each one, naming the people who are most crushed so that they know they are not forgotten.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Use this verse when fear and sorrow feel too large to face. Speak the word refuge aloud and ask God to be the place where your family can rest when the world feels unsteady.

Matthew 5:4

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

(WEB)

Pray this as a promise over those who mourn. Ask Jesus to fulfill it in ways you can see and in ways that only become clear over time, trusting that comfort can come slowly.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

(WEB)

Bring this verse before God when anxiety is mixed in with grief. Ask for the peace Jesus describes, and pray that it would guard hearts that feel exposed and unsettled.

Revelation 21:4

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away.”

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly when the loss feels final. Thank God that grief does not have the last word, and ask him to hold your hope for the day when every tear will be wiped away.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many families find that the early morning or late evening works best, when the house is quiet and the phone is out of reach. Sit somewhere you can stay for a while, and keep a box of tissues nearby. If your hands need something to do, hold a cup of tea, a photograph, or the edge of a blanket while you pray. There is no wrong posture and no need to finish the whole prayer in one sitting.

Invite someone else to pray it with you, or ask a trusted friend to read it aloud while you listen. A child, a grandparent, a pastor, or a neighbor can each bring something different to the words. Let them pray the parts that feel too heavy for you to speak, and let your own voice return when you are ready.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord hold your family in the middle of this loss, and may his peace settle over each heart that is aching. May the people who love you show up in quiet, practical ways, and may you find rest in the arms of the one who knows your grief completely. May the memory of your loved one stay close and tender, and may hope slowly grow beside the sorrow.
