This short prayer for safe travels is written for the moments just before you leave: at the front door with the bags packed, in the driver’s seat before you turn the key, or in the airport while the boarding call is still an hour away. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words. It asks God for protection on the road, in the air, or on the water, and for a calm mind along the way.

Short Prayer for Safe Travels

Lord, thank you for the gift of this journey and for the people who are going with me, or waiting for me at the other end. You know every road, runway and highway I will cross today. Go before me and watch over every mile. Keep the vehicle I am in sound and the driver alert, and guard the hands on the wheel and the eyes on the road. Surround the people around me, whether they are strangers in the next seat or other drivers I will never meet.

I also bring you the worries I carry. I think about delays, unfamiliar places, missed connections and the what-ifs that keep me awake. Quiet my heart when fear rises. Remind me that you are already in the places I am going to, and that nothing about this trip catches you by surprise. Give me patience when plans shift, and wisdom to make good choices when I am tired. Bring me home safely to the people who love me, and let me arrive grateful for your care. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, keep me safe on this trip. Guard my steps, my drive or my flight, and everyone traveling with me. Steady my nerves and keep my attention where it belongs. Bring us all to our destination, and bring us home again when the journey is done. Thank you that you hear me wherever I am. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

Pray this verse by asking God to keep watch over your going out and your coming in. Name the specific trip ahead and thank him that his protection covers the whole route, not just the start of it.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let it become a request: ask God to send his care ahead of you. Pray it for the road, the train, the flight, or the crowd you will move through, trusting his watchfulness over each one.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

When plans are uncertain, pray this passage as a request for direction. Ask God to guide every turn and decision on the journey, especially when you must choose a route or change your plans.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Use this verse when anxiety surfaces. Pray it back to God as a reminder that he is with you, and ask him to strengthen you for any unexpected problem that arises on the way.

Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the moments when the journey feels long or lonely, or when you pass through a stretch that unsettles you. Ask the Shepherd to stay close and make his presence felt in the hard places.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer at a moment when your hands are free, such as while you buckle your seatbelt, load the car, or wait at the gate. Some people find it helpful to touch the car keys, the boarding pass or the bag they are carrying as they pray, letting the object remind them of the journey ahead. If you are traveling with children or an older parent, read the prayer together so everyone hears the request for protection.

You can also ask a friend or family member to pray this prayer for you before you leave, or to pray it over the person driving or flying. Consider writing the short version on a card and keeping it in your wallet or glove box. When fear returns on the road, you will have the words ready and can return to them quietly, without needing to find the right phrasing.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and beside you on every mile of this journey. May he keep your going out and your coming in, and grant you a calm heart and a clear mind. May you arrive safely, rest well, and return home with a grateful spirit, knowing you were never traveling alone.
