This morning prayer is for the start of a new week, when the calendar is full and the list of what needs doing is already running in your head. Pray it early, before you check your phone or step out the door, while the day is still quiet. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where they fit better.

Morning Prayer for a New Week

Lord, thank you for this new week. Before I know what it will hold, I know you have already been in it. You were present in the hours I haven’t lived yet, and you know the meetings, the deadlines, the phone calls I dread, and the people I will see at work, at school, and at home. Give me a clear mind this morning. Quiet the part of me that is already rehearsing everything that could go wrong, and help me take the next step in front of me instead of trying to carry the whole week at once.

Be with the people I love. Watch over the ones who are sick, the ones who are grieving, and the ones who are carrying something heavy that they haven’t told anyone. Give me patience with my family when mornings are rushed, and gentleness with the coworker or neighbor who is hard to be around. Where I have been impatient, forgive me, and where I have been ready to give up on a person or a task, give me another chance to show your kindness. Let my words be useful today, and let me listen more than I speak.

Above all, keep my heart close to you. When the week gets loud, remind me that you are steady and that my worth does not rise or fall with my productivity. Help me do my work with care and honesty, rest when I am tired, and trust you when I cannot see the outcome. Walk with me through every day of this week. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, this is a new week and I am already feeling the weight of it. Be with me in the first hour and in the last. Steady my thoughts, guide my hands, and help me be kind to the people I meet. Give me what I need for today and nothing more, and remind me that you are with me all week. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Read this as you begin the week, letting it remind you that each morning is a fresh gift of God’s faithfulness. Pray it with thanks for the mercies already waiting for you today.

Psalm 118:24

This is the day that the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it!

(WEB)

Speak this over the day ahead as a deliberate choice to receive it with gratitude. Ask God to help you rejoice in the day even when the tasks are ordinary or hard.

Psalm 90:12

So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God for wisdom in how you spend the week. Pray that your time and attention would go toward what matters most to him.

Matthew 6:34

Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to the moment you feel anxious about what is coming. Ask Jesus to help you set down tomorrow’s worries and focus on what this day needs.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel depleted before the week has even started. Ask God to renew your strength so you can keep going without losing heart.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer before your first task of the day, while you are still sitting in bed, at the kitchen table with coffee, or in the car before you go in. Keep a notepad nearby and write down the two or three things that are weighing on you most, then read them back to God as you pray. Physical habits help the words stay with you, so you might hold a cup, open your planner, or place a hand on the table as you speak.

This prayer also works well shared. A spouse, a close friend, or a small group can pray it together on Sunday evening or first thing Monday, taking turns reading a paragraph each. Praying with someone else can keep you accountable to the week ahead and give you someone to check in with when Wednesday feels long.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into this week and walk beside you through every meeting, errand, and conversation. May he give strength to your hands and peace to your heart, and may you know that you are loved on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday alike.
