These short prayers for Veterans Day give you words to thank God for those who served in the armed forces, to pray for the living and to remember the fallen. Pray them on November 11, at a Veterans Day ceremony, or whenever you want to honor a veteran in your life. Read them aloud as written, or use them as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayers for Veterans Day

Lord, on this day we remember the men and women who answered the call to serve. Some left home for the first time at eighteen. Some left children behind, or a spouse who lay awake every night waiting for the phone to ring. You know the names of every one of them, including the ones no one else remembers. Thank You for their courage, their discipline and their willingness to put others first.

We also pray for the veterans who are still carrying what they saw and did. Some wake up in the middle of the night with their hearts pounding. Some struggle to find work, to sleep or to feel at home again. Comfort them, Father. Give them good rest, honest friends and the kind of help that restores their hope. Be near to the families who love them and feel the weight alongside them.

For those who gave their lives, we ask that You would hold their families close and keep their memory from fading. Let us never take their sacrifice lightly. Teach us to live in a way that honors what they gave, and make us people who are worthy of the freedom they protected. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, thank You for every veteran who served and every family that waited for them to come home. Be close to those carrying hard memories today. Bring peace where there is fear, rest where there is exhaustion and healing where there is pain. Help us honor them not only with words but with lives of gratitude and care. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Pray this for the veterans who feel unsteady or afraid. Ask God to be the refuge they can run to when memories rise up, and thank Him that He is never out of reach to anyone who calls on Him.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Use this verse for the families of the fallen and for veterans who are grieving friends they lost. Ask the Lord to draw near to every broken heart, and to rescue those who feel crushed by loss.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Pray this for those who are serving now or preparing to serve. Ask God for courage that comes from His presence, and for steady confidence in the places where fear would otherwise take hold.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Speak this over a veteran who feels alone in the transition back to civilian life. Ask God to strengthen and uphold them, and to remind them that He has not left them to face the road by themselves.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Pray this for our nation and for those who lead it. Ask God to shape us into people who act justly, show mercy and walk humbly, so that the honor we give veterans is matched by how we treat one another.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find the early morning or the quiet minutes before a Veterans Day ceremony the best time to pray. Stand or sit somewhere you can be still, and hold something in your hands while you speak, such as a flag pin, a photograph of a loved one who served, or simply your own folded hands. Let the words slow you down enough to remember the names of the people you are thinking of.

You can pray this together with a family at the dinner table, with a small group from church, or with a veteran who would welcome the company. Invite each person to add the name of someone they are thinking of, and close by reading the prayer aloud together. Shared prayer often helps the heavy memories feel a little lighter.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless the men and women who have served, and keep them in His care. May He give rest to the weary, comfort to the grieving and peace to every home that has been touched by sacrifice. May the courage they showed inspire those who come after them, and may God’s faithfulness surround each family from this day forward.
