This is a written prayer for the moments when you feel worn thin and need God to supply the strength you do not have on your own. Pray it when you wake up dreading the day, when a diagnosis or a hard conversation is waiting, or when you have simply been running on empty for too long. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your heart is more specific.

Christian Prayer for Strength

Lord, I come to you tired, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. My body aches from carrying too much, my mind keeps replaying the things I am afraid of, and some days I cannot tell where my own energy ends and my worry begins. You know the list I have not said out loud: the work I cannot seem to finish, the people I am trying to hold together, the quiet fear that I am failing the ones who depend on me.

Give me the strength I cannot manufacture. Steady my hands for the next task and my heart for the next hard word. When I want to quit, remind me that you have not quit on me. When I feel weak, let your power be the thing that shows up, not my own pride or performance. Help me take the next step, and then the one after that, without asking to see the whole road at once.

Renew me in the places I have run dry, and teach me to rest when rest is what you are asking of me. I give you the outcomes I cannot control. Hold what I have dropped, and let me walk on with a little more courage than I had this morning. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am running out of strength right now. Be my strength in this moment, steady my breathing and my hands, and give me enough courage for the next thing you put in front of me. I trust you with the rest. Help me lean on you instead of on my own tired effort. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming your exhaustion honestly, then asking God to give you the strength that faint and weary people cannot produce for themselves. Let it remind you that God’s strength is given to those who have no reserves left.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly and pray it back to God, telling him where you feel weak. Ask him to let his grace be enough in exactly those places, rather than trying to hide your weakness from him.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Use this verse to lift up the situation that is wearing you down. Pray that God would be your refuge right now, so that you can stop bracing yourself alone against whatever is coming.

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

(WEB)

Pray this verse with the specific task in front of you in mind. Ask God to give you what you need to do what he has called you to do, not some general sense of power for its own sake.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your weariness to God in prayer, using this verse as an invitation. Tell him you are tired and ask him to show you what it looks like to come to him for rest rather than pushing harder on your own.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer first thing in the morning, before your phone and your to-do list take over, or in the car before you walk into a stressful meeting. Sit somewhere quiet if you can, and let your hands rest open in your lap or hold a cup of something warm. Speaking the words slowly, with a pause after each sentence, helps your heart keep pace with your mouth.

If you are praying this for someone else, such as a spouse, a parent, or a friend going through a hard season, read it over them or alongside them. You might pray it together over coffee or on a phone call, changing the pronouns to fit their situation. A friend who prays with you can carry some of the weight so that you are not holding it alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who gives strength to the weary meet you in your tiredness and steady you for what lies ahead. May his grace be enough for each hour, and may you rest in the knowledge that you are held. Go in peace, and be strengthened by the one who has not forgotten you.
