A morning prayer of thanks is a way to open the day by naming what God has already given before you ask for anything else. It works best in the first minutes after you wake, before the phone and the to-do list take over, though it fits just as well over coffee or on the drive to work. Read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayer of Thanks

Lord, thank you for this new morning. Before my feet hit the floor, I want to say thank you for the breath in my lungs and for sleep that carried me through the night. Thank you that you were awake when I was not, and that your faithfulness did not pause while I rested.

Thank you for the people who share my life, the ones I will see in the next hour and the ones I will only think of later. Thank you for the work in front of me today, even the parts I would rather skip, and for the strength to do it. Thank you for the small mercies I tend to overlook: hot water, a working car, a bit of quiet before the house wakes up. Help me notice them as I go.

As I step into this day, keep me mindful that every good thing comes from you. When I meet a difficult person, a hard conversation or an unexpected problem, remind me that you are already in those moments. Let my first words today be words of gratitude. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, thank you for this day you have made. Thank you for the rest of the night and for the life you keep giving me. Help me see your hand in the ordinary things ahead, and let my heart stay thankful as I go about my work and meet the people I love. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 118:24

This is the day that the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it!

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly and let the word “day” settle in. Thank God for the particular day you have been given, and ask him to help you rejoice in it instead of only bracing for it.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

This passage was written in grief, yet it names God’s mercy as something renewed every morning. Pray it as a reminder that yesterday’s failures do not cancel today’s fresh supply of grace.

Psalm 92:1-2

1 It is a good thing to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to your name, Most High; 2 to proclaim your loving kindness in the morning, and your faithfulness every night…

(WEB)

The psalmist calls it good to give thanks at dawn and in the night. Use these lines to begin your day by speaking gratitude out loud, even if your voice is still sleepy.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

16 Rejoice always. 17 Pray without ceasing. 18 In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.

(WEB)

Paul ties rejoicing, prayer and thanks together as one way of living. Pray this passage as a request that gratitude would shape the whole day, not just the opening minutes.

Psalm 90:14

Satisfy us in the morning with your loving kindness, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

(WEB)

This verse asks God to satisfy us in the morning with his steadfast love so we can sing for joy. Use it as a request for the day’s first mercy, and thank God in advance for whatever he sends.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed moment, such as right after your alarm goes off, while the coffee brews, or during the first five minutes in the car. Keep your Bible or a note with this prayer nearby so you do not have to remember the words. Sitting on the edge of the bed with a hand over your heart or holding a warm mug can help your body slow down enough to mean what you say.

A family member, roommate or friend can pray this prayer with you, taking turns reading paragraphs aloud. Some people find it helpful to add one specific thing they are thankful for before each line that begins “Thank you.” Over time, these mornings can become a shared rhythm that steadies the whole household.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who made this morning go before you into every hour of this day. May his mercies meet you where you are, and may you notice his goodness in the ordinary moments that follow. May you walk in peace and carry a grateful heart wherever you go.
