This lesson teaches children that God’s Word grows in hearts that listen and trust, and that Jesus is powerful enough to calm any storm. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
Big Idea
Jesus wants us to listen carefully to his words and trust him, even when we feel scared. He can be trusted in every storm.
Memory Verse
Mark 4:9
He said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.”
(WEB)
Cup both hands behind your ears like a satellite dish as you say the verse. Then point to your own ears, reminding children that listening is how God’s Word gets into our hearts.
The Story: Mark 4 for Kids
One day Jesus sat in a boat on the lake while a big crowd stood on the shore. He wanted everyone to hear his teaching, so he told them a story about a farmer. The farmer walked out to his field and threw seeds everywhere he went. Some seeds fell on the hard road, and birds flew down and ate them up. Other seeds landed on rocky ground, sprouted fast, then dried up in the hot sun because they had no roots.
Some seeds fell among thorny weeds that grew up and choked them out. But other seeds landed in good, rich soil. Those seeds grew tall and strong and made lots of fruit. When the crowd went home, Jesus told his friends that the seed is God’s Word. The different kinds of soil show how people listen, some quickly forget, and some hold on and grow.
Later that evening, Jesus told his friends, “Let’s go to the other side of the lake.” They climbed into the boat with him. Jesus was so tired that he fell asleep on a cushion in the back. Suddenly a huge windstorm roared across the water. Waves crashed into the boat until it was almost full of water.
The disciples were terrified, so they woke Jesus and cried, “Teacher, don’t you care that we are going to drown?” Jesus stood up, looked at the wind and the waves, and said, “Peace! Be still!” Right away the wind stopped and the water became calm. Then Jesus asked his friends why they were so afraid and why they had no faith.
The disciples were amazed. They asked one another, “Who is this man? Even the wind and the sea obey him!” Jesus was showing them that he has power over everything in creation.
Read It Together
Mark 4:14
The farmer sows the word.
(WEB)
Point out that the farmer is planting God’s Word. Explain that the seed is the message about Jesus, and it is good news meant to be heard and received by everyone.
Mark 4:39
He awoke, and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
(WEB)
Show children that Jesus spoke directly to the wind and waves, and they obeyed him right away. Encourage them to notice how Jesus stayed calm and in control during the storm.
Mark 4:40
He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? How is it that you have no faith?”
(WEB)
Ask children to notice the question Jesus asked his friends. Explain that he gently invited them to trust him instead of being afraid, and he invites us to trust him too.
Talk About It
- What kind of soil do you think your heart is most like when you hear God’s Word, and why?
- What is one thing you can do this week to listen better when someone reads from the Bible?
- Why do you think the disciples were so scared of the storm even though they were with Jesus?
- What helps you feel brave when something frightening happens in your life?
- How does it make you feel to know that Jesus has power over the wind and the waves?
Activity Ideas
Seed Jar Drawing
Give each child a sheet of paper and crayons or markers. Ask them to draw four patches of soil: a road, rocks, thorns, and good ground. Have them draw seeds in each patch and then show what happens to each one. Let them color their favorite good-ground plant tall and full of fruit. Talk together about how we can be good soil.
Calm the Storm Game
Have children stand in a circle and pretend to be waves by swaying their arms. Choose one child to be Jesus in the middle. When Jesus says “Peace! Be still!” everyone freezes and becomes calm. Repeat a few times, switching who plays Jesus. This helps children act out how Jesus brings peace.
Take-Home Seed Cup
Give each child a clear cup, a damp paper towel, and a bean seed. Have them place the seed between the cup’s side and the paper towel. Let them water it lightly and set it in a sunny spot. Ask them to check it each day and remember that God’s Word helps us grow. Encourage them to share their plant with the family at dinner.
Teacher Notes
For adults, the parable teaches that the Word of God is powerful and fruitful, but its impact depends on how people receive it. The storm account reveals Jesus’ divine authority over creation and invites believers to trust him even in fearful circumstances. Both stories call disciples to deeper faith and steady listening.
Avoid overstating to children that every person who listens will automatically grow into a perfect Christian, or that trusting Jesus means nothing bad will ever happen. Keep the focus on hearing God’s Word and trusting Jesus’ care.
A Prayer to Close
Dear Jesus, help us listen carefully to your words and grow strong in our hearts. When we feel scared, remind us that you are with us and you are powerful over everything. Help us trust you every day. Amen.
