This morning prayer is written for anyone who wants to start the day closer to God, paying attention to Him before the noise of messages, errands and obligations takes over. Pray it first thing, while the house is quiet or while the coffee is still hot, and then carry its words into the hours ahead. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words about the people and tasks you already know you will face.
Morning Prayers for a Closer Walk with God
Father, I come to You before anything else this morning. Before I check my phone, before I think about the list waiting for me, I want to know You are near. You have already been awake, already working, already thinking of me. Help me to notice that. Quiet the restless part of my mind that rushes ahead to meetings, deadlines and conversations I have not had yet, and bring me back to the simple fact that You are with me right now.
As this day unfolds, I ask You to walk with me through each hour. When I sit down with my coworkers, give me patience and honesty. When I face the people I love most, whether at breakfast or on the phone or across the table tonight, give me gentleness and the wisdom to listen. When I am tempted to hurry past You and rely on my own strength, remind me that I am dependent on You for every breath and every good thing. Let my first thoughts today belong to You, and let my last thoughts tonight return to You as well.
Make me more like Jesus in the ordinary moments, not only in the big decisions. Teach me to speak kindly when I am tired, to work honestly when no one is watching, and to trust You when the day does not go the way I planned. I want to know You more clearly by the time evening comes. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am starting this day in Your presence. Walk with me into every task and every person I meet. Keep my heart soft toward You and toward others, and help me to hear Your voice above the noise. Let me know You more with each hour I spend in Your company. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a time and place where you will not be interrupted for a few minutes, such as a chair by the window, the edge of the bed before you get up, or the kitchen table before anyone else comes down. Holding a cup of coffee or resting your hands open in your lap can help your body settle while your mind catches up. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each paragraph to name the specific people and tasks you have in mind.
If you are praying with a spouse, child, roommate or friend, take turns reading a paragraph each, or let one person pray while the others listen and add a quiet amen. Writing the prayer on a card and keeping it in your bag, on your desk or beside your bathroom mirror lets you return to it through the day. Many people find it helpful to pray the shorter version again at midday or at the start of a hard meeting.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you into this day and walk beside you through every hour. May He keep your heart close to His, steady your hands for the work ahead, and make His presence known to you in ordinary moments. May you rest tonight in the knowledge that He has been faithful, and may you wake tomorrow ready to walk with Him again.
