This morning prayer is for asking God to open your heart before the day’s first conversation, errand or decision. Pray it when you wake, while the coffee is brewing, or in the car before you walk into work. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own names and needs in the blanks.
Morning Prayers for a Generous Heart
Father, I come to You before the day has a chance to crowd me. You have given me more than I have ever earned, and I am asking You to make my hands and heart open this morning. Show me where I am holding tight: to my time, my money, my patience, my opinions about other people. Loosen my grip on what is mine so I can see what is needed around me.
Today I will meet people who are tired, rushed and quietly carrying something heavy. The cashier, the coworker who keeps missing deadlines, the neighbor whose car is still in the driveway. Give me eyes to notice them and a willingness to act when You prompt me. Let me be the one who offers a kind word, a helping hand or a listening ear without first calculating what it will cost me.
Guard me from the small stinginess that hides in my thoughts: the resentment when someone asks for help, the quick judgment of someone who seems to have less than I do. Fill me with the kind of generosity that comes from knowing You have been generous to me. I trust You to supply what I need for today, so I do not have to hoard it. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, before this day gets busy, open my hands and my heart. Show me one person I can serve, one gift I can give without expecting a return, and one habit of holding on that I need to release. Help me give freely because You have given so freely to me. Amen.

Pray this verse over the people you will see first today, such as family, coworkers or neighbors. Ask God to turn your attention outward so you notice the needs and interests of others alongside your own.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray it in the first ten minutes after you wake, before you pick up your phone or check messages. If you can, sit near a window or at the kitchen table with a cup of something warm in your hands. Holding the cup gives your body a small, physical reminder that you are receiving before you are asked to give.
If you are praying with a spouse, child or roommate, read the main prayer together and let each person name one person they will serve that day. You might also keep a note on the fridge or in your bag listing the names you pray for, so the prayer follows you into the afternoon.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord open your hands and your heart this morning. May you notice the one who needs you, and may you give with a light and willing spirit. May the God who has been so generous to you go before you and walk with you through every hour of this day.
