This morning prayer is written for couples who want their marriage to grow stronger, one ordinary day at a time. Pray it in the first quiet minutes after you wake, before the phone and the to-do list take over. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayers for a Stronger Marriage

Lord, thank you for this new day and for the person I have been given to share my life with. Before I step into the kitchen, the calendar, and the conversations waiting for me, I ask you to soften my heart toward my spouse. Help me notice what they need today, even when it is not what I expected, and help me speak to them with patience rather than sharp words when we are tired or rushed.

Father, guard our time together. Where we have drifted into living as roommates running separate errands, draw us back to each other. Give us small, faithful moments of kindness: a cup of coffee handed over without being asked, a question asked and then truly listened to, a word of thanks for something that is easy to overlook. Let our marriage be a place where each of us feels known, forgiven, and safe. Where I have been holding onto resentment, loosen my grip and help me choose grace. Keep us both honest with you and with each other. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, bless my marriage today. Give me patience when I am tired, gentleness when I am tempted to snap, and eyes to see what my spouse needs. Keep our love steady and our hearts open to each other. Help me be the kind of partner you are shaping me to be, starting with the very next conversation. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

Pray this passage by thanking God for the companionship you share. Ask him to help you be the partner who lifts the other up when one of you stumbles, rather than leaving them alone in the fall.

1 Corinthians 13:4-5

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil…

(WEB)

Read this slowly and name one quality of love it describes that you need today. Ask God to grow that quality in you before you speak to your spouse this morning.

Ephesians 4:2-3

2 With all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love; 3 being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

(WEB)

Ask the Spirit to give you humility and gentleness in the moments when disagreement is likely. Pray for the patience to keep the peace that binds you together as a couple.

Colossians 3:12-14

12 Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. 14 Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.

(WEB)

Pray that you would clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, and forgiveness this day. Ask God to help you let love be the thing that holds your marriage together.

Proverbs 31:10-12

10 Who can find a worthy woman? For her price is far above rubies. 11 The heart of her husband trusts in her. He shall have no lack of gain. 12 She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.

(WEB)

Use this passage to thank God for your spouse’s character and goodness. Ask him to help you encourage and build up your partner rather than take them for granted.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you can be still, such as in bed before you get up, at the kitchen table with a warm drink, or during a short walk around the block before the house wakes. Keep a Bible or this page nearby so you can read the verses aloud. If your hands want something to do, hold your coffee cup, or hold your spouse’s hand if they are beside you, and let the touch remind you of the prayer’s meaning.

If you are praying alone, you can still ask God to bless your marriage, and you may want to pray it for your spouse by name. Some couples pray this prayer together, taking turns reading a paragraph each. A trusted friend, pastor, or small group can also pray for your marriage, especially during seasons of strain. Whatever form it takes, let the prayer become a habit you return to each morning.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this marriage with steady love, honest words, and a deep sense of peace. May each of you find the other a true friend, and may God meet you both in the ordinary moments of this day with grace enough for what it brings.
