This morning prayer is written for families who want to ask God for health before the day’s errands, school runs and work begin. Pray it as soon as you are up, or sit with it over coffee before anyone else stirs. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own family members’ names and worries into your own words.

Morning Prayers for Family Health

Father, I come to you before the house wakes up. Thank you for this new day and for the breath you have given everyone under this roof. Be near to each of them this morning. Watch over the little ones getting ready for school, the teenager who was up too late, and my spouse heading out early. Guard their bodies from sickness and injury, and give them strength for the work and walking ahead of them.

I pray for the ones I worry about most. Be close to the aching knee, the cough that won’t go away, the appointment later this week, and the medicine that needs to be picked up at noon. Steady the hands of the doctors, nurses and pharmacists who care for us. Where there is fear, give calm. Where there is tiredness, give rest. Let our home be a place where health is protected and where we take care of one another with patience and kindness. Help us to eat well, drink water, move our bodies and notice when something is wrong. Keep us from carelessness and from anxiety alike. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my family is in your hands this morning. Keep each of them safe on the roads, at school, at work and at home. Heal what is sick, strengthen what is weak, and give us wisdom to care for our bodies well. Thank you that you see every one of us today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this as you think about someone leaving the house today. Ask God to guard their going out and their coming in, trusting that he watches over every hour between now and this evening.

Psalm 103:2-3

2 Praise the LORD, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits; 3 who forgives all your sins; who heals all your diseases…

(WEB)

Read this slowly while you think of a family member who is recovering or struggling. Thank God for the healing you have already seen, and ask him to bring health where it is still missing.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to mind for anyone who feels worn out before the day has started. Ask God to give strength to the weary, and name the people in your house who need it most.

3 John 1:2

Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be healthy, even as your soul prospers.

(WEB)

Pray this for the health of your whole household. John’s wish that a friend would prosper and be in good health gives you words to ask God for the same blessing on the people you love.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this when worry about a family member’s health starts to crowd out your thoughts. Hand each concern to God in prayer with thanksgiving, and ask for the peace that guards the heart and mind.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet spot near the start of your day, such as the kitchen table before the children come down or the car before you drive off. Keep a pen nearby so you can write down any name or concern that comes to mind while you pray. Some people find it helpful to hold a cup of tea or a family member’s photo while they speak the words.

If you live with others, invite one of them to read the prayer aloud while the rest listen, or ask each person to add one health concern they carry into the day. You might also pray it together as a family over breakfast, placing one hand gently on the table as a reminder that you are asking God to watch over everyone at it.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord guard your family’s health as you go into this day. May he give strength to the weary, rest to the restless and healing to those who need it. May his peace settle over your home and go with each person as they leave the door.
