This morning prayer is for the start of the day, when you want to bring God your need for forgiveness and healing before the first meeting, the first text, or the first hard conversation begins. Pray it when you wake, while the house is still quiet, or on the drive in. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayer for Forgiveness and Healing

Lord, I come to you before the noise of this day starts. Last night I went to bed carrying things I did not finish with you: the sharp word I said to my husband, the way I snapped at the kids before school, the resentment I still feel toward my brother. I confess them now. Forgive me, and cleanse me of what I have held onto. Thank you that your mercy is new every morning, and that I do not have to earn it.

I also bring you the places in my body and heart that still hurt. The tiredness that never lifts, the worry that keeps me awake, the grief I have not named. Heal what is broken in me, and heal the relationships that have been strained by my failures and by the failures of others. Help me to receive your healing without rushing it. Give me patience for the process and trust that you are working even when I cannot see it.

As I walk into today, guard my tongue at work, my patience with the people I love, and my honesty when I am tempted to hide. Show me who needs forgiveness from me, and give me the courage to ask for it. Let my ordinary tasks be done in the quiet strength you give. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, forgive me for what I carried into this morning, the anger, the pride, the careless words. Heal what is sore in my body and in my heart. Help me to forgive as I have been forgiven, and to rest in your mercy as I begin this day. Walk with me into every meeting and every conversation. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Start the morning by remembering that God’s compassion does not run out overnight. Pray these words when you feel you have failed yet again, and ask for fresh mercy to meet you at the kitchen table.

Psalm 103:2-3

2 Praise the LORD, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits; 3 who forgives all your sins; who heals all your diseases…

(WEB)

David calls on himself to remember all the good God has done, including forgiving sin and healing disease. Pray this slowly, naming one specific sin and one specific sickness you want God to address today.

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(WEB)

John links confession with faithfulness and justice, not with fear. Use this verse to bring your failures into the open before God, trusting that he is faithful to cleanse what you bring to him.

Isaiah 53:5

But he was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed.

(WEB)

This verse ties healing to the wounds the servant bore. Pray it when your own wounds feel too deep to explain, and thank God that healing has been provided in a way that does not depend on your strength.

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Paul asks believers to be kind and forgiving as God has forgiven them. Pray this before you face someone who has hurt you, asking God to soften your heart and give you the words to extend forgiveness.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed spot for this prayer, such as the chair by the window, the edge of the bed before your feet hit the floor, or the corner of the kitchen while the coffee brews. Keep a pen nearby, and if a specific sin or hurt comes to mind, write it down and pray over that line. Many people find that the first five minutes of the day set the tone for everything after, so give this prayer that time before checking your phone.

If you are praying with a spouse, a friend, or a roommate, take turns reading a paragraph each. Ask the other person to pray for the specific person you need to forgive or the specific healing you need. A morning prayer partner can also check in later in the day, asking whether you were able to speak the words you prayed.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you today and forgive what needs forgiving in you and through you. May his healing reach the places that still ache, and may his peace settle your heart as you step into the hours ahead. May you walk in mercy and carry it to the people you meet.
