This morning prayer asks God to make you gentle in your words, reactions and attitudes as the day unfolds. Pray it when you first wake, before the phone, the inbox and the people in your home demand your attention, or read it through once while you have your coffee. You can pray it word for word, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own voice.

Morning Prayer for Gentleness

Father, I come to you before the day starts pulling at me. You know what today holds: the messages that will need answers, the child who will test my patience, the coworker whose tone always seems to rub me wrong, and the quiet moments when I will be tempted to snap first and think later. Make me gentle in all of it. Soften the edges of my voice and slow my hands when they want to grab, push or type too fast.

Lord, I confess that gentleness does not come naturally to me. I often mistake speed for strength and sharpness for honesty. Teach me to pause before I answer, to listen all the way through before I correct, and to speak the kind of truth that builds up rather than cuts down. Let my gentleness be real, not a mask over frustration, and let it come from a heart that has already rested in your love this morning.

Go before me into every conversation and every task. When I feel the heat rising, remind me of how patiently you have dealt with me. Help me meet people where they are today, and let the way I treat them show that I belong to you. Thank you that your gentleness toward me is never in short supply. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, make me gentle today. Slow my tongue, steady my hands and soften my response to whoever I meet next. Let your patience show through me before I have a chance to get frustrated. Help me remember how gently you have treated me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

(WEB)

Paul lists gentleness as fruit of the Spirit, not a personality trait you must manufacture. Pray this verse by asking the Spirit to produce that fruit in you today, especially in the moments you feel least able to be gentle.

Ephesians 4:2

With all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love…

(WEB)

Paul ties gentleness to humility and patience, which are the qualities that let us bear with others. Pray it over the people you will live alongside today, asking God to help you extend the patience you have received.

Proverbs 15:1

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

(WEB)

This proverb shows how a gentle answer can calm a tense moment. Pray it before any conversation you expect to be difficult, asking God to give you the words that lower the temperature rather than raise it.

Matthew 11:29

Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.

(WEB)

Jesus describes himself as gentle and humble in heart, and invites weary people to learn from him. Pray this verse by asking him to teach you his gentleness as you go through the day.

Colossians 3:12

Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance…

(WEB)

Paul calls believers to clothe themselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Pray it as a way of getting dressed for the day, asking God to put these qualities on you before you leave the house.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer while you are still in bed or seated at the kitchen table, before you check your phone. Keep a pen or sticky note nearby and write one person or situation from today’s schedule that is likely to test your patience. Read the prayer again, this time with that person’s name in mind.

If you live with others, consider praying this with your family at breakfast, or let a spouse or friend pray it over you. Holding a warm mug or a cup of water can help you slow down and notice your body while you pray. Ask someone to remind you of this prayer later in the day if you find yourself getting sharp.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who is gentle and humble in heart go with you into this day. May his patience fill your words, his kindness shape your reactions, and his peace steady your steps. May the people you meet feel his gentleness through you.
