This morning prayer is for anyone heading out on a trip, whether it is a short drive across town, a flight to see family, or a long road ahead. Pray it before you get in the car, at the airport gate, or while you sit at the kitchen table with your bag packed. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words to the places and people you are leaving behind.

Morning Prayers for Safe Travels

Lord, thank you for this new morning and for the journey you have placed in front of me today. I hold the keys, the tickets, the map on my phone, and the plans I have made, and I give them to you. Keep my hands steady on the wheel or the rail, and keep my eyes alert to the road, the sky, and the people around me. Guard me from carelessness and from distraction, and let my mind stay clear when traffic is heavy or the schedule shifts.

Go ahead of me to every turn, every crossing, and every stop along the way. Watch over the people who are traveling with me, and over the strangers I will share a train car, a runway, or a highway with today. If I am worried about delays, connections, or arriving late, settle my heart and remind me that my days are in your hands. Bring me home safely to the ones who are waiting for me, and let me arrive with gratitude for every mile you carried me through. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am heading out, and I need you close. Go before me on this road or in this air, and keep the vehicle, the people beside me, and the miles ahead in your care. Give me calm hands and a watchful mind, and bring me safely to where I am going. Thank you that you never leave my side. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you step out the door, asking the Lord to guard your going and your coming. It reminds you that your comings and goings are held under his watch, not only on the trip itself but in the return home as well.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly while you buckle your seatbelt or check your bags. Ask God to send his angels to keep watch over you and the people you are traveling with today.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

When your plans feel uncertain, pray these words over your route and schedule. Ask God to make your path straight, especially where you cannot see what lies ahead.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Use this verse when fear rises about an unfamiliar place or a long drive. Tell God you are choosing to trust that he is with you and will strengthen you for whatever the day brings.

Psalm 139:7-10

7 Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there! 9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

(WEB)

Pray this passage when you feel far from home or alone on the road. It assures you that God’s presence reaches to every place you go, including the places you have not yet reached.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray the main prayer while you are still at home, ideally before you pick up your keys or check in your luggage. Sit down for a minute, with your coffee or your bag in your lap, so the words have room to settle before the day speeds up. If you are driving, you can keep the shorter version in mind and pray it at each stoplight or whenever the road gets tricky.

This prayer also works well for a family member, friend, or coworker who is traveling. Pray it aloud in the kitchen as they leave, or write the words on a card and tuck it into their bag. Asking God for safety on someone else’s behalf is a quiet way to stay connected while you are apart.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and beside you on every mile today. May he keep your steps steady, your mind clear, and your heart at peace until you arrive safely wherever you are headed. And may you return home rested, grateful, and surrounded by those who love you.
