This prayer is for the end of a day that did not go well, when the stress, disappointment or exhaustion is still sitting in your chest and you do not know what to do with it. Pray it in the evening, in the car before you walk inside, or in bed with the lights off. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words about whatever the day held.

Prayer After a Hard Day

Lord, I am tired. The day asked more of me than I had to give, and I am carrying things I could not set down while I was busy: the phone call that went badly, the deadline that slipped, the words I wish I had not said to someone I love. I bring all of it to you now, the small irritations and the heavier worries I have not yet named out loud. Thank you that I do not have to tidy them up before I come.

Be near me in the quiet. Slow my thoughts so they stop running ahead to tomorrow. Where I was short-tempered, forgive me, and help me make things right when I have the strength. Where I was afraid, steady my heart. Where I was lonely even in a crowded room, remind me that you have been with me in every hour, including the ones I hardly noticed.

Give me rest that goes deeper than sleep. Let my body unclench, let my shoulders drop, and let me trust that what I could not finish today is not mine to finish alone. Hold the people I am worried about tonight, and hold me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am worn down and I have nothing left to fix this with. Take what I could not manage today. Calm the noise in my head, forgive what I got wrong, and remind me that I am known and not forgotten. Give me enough rest to start again in the morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

Pray this slowly when your mind will not stop racing. Ask God to make you still enough to notice that he is God, and that the outcome of the day is not resting only on your shoulders.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring the exhaustion itself to Jesus by name. Name the specific weight you are carrying, and ask him to take it, trusting that his invitation is an actual invitation to you tonight.

Psalm 55:22

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

(WEB)

Pray this over the worries you cannot solve before bed. Hand each one over in turn, and ask God to sustain you through the night rather than asking him to remove every difficulty at once.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Use this when yesterday’s failures are weighing on you. Thank God that his mercy is new each morning, and ask him to let that newness reach the parts of the day you wish you could redo.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this as you lie down. Ask God to give you the kind of peace that lets you sleep, and to keep watch over the people and situations you are anxious about while you rest.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a place where you can be still for a few minutes, such as the edge of your bed, a chair by the window, or the driveway before you go inside. Sit with your hands open on your lap or resting on your knees. If your hands want something to do, hold a cup of tea or a smooth stone, and let the physical warmth remind you that you are present rather than still replaying the day.

You can also pray this with someone else, such as a spouse, a roommate or a friend on the phone. Take turns reading a line each, or let the other person pray the shorter version over you. Sharing a hard day out loud often loosens its grip, and hearing someone else ask God for mercy on your behalf can be a quiet gift.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who sees the whole of this day meet you in the stillness that follows it. May he cover what was hard, receive what was honest, and give you rest that does not depend on how well you performed. Go into the night held, and wake to mercy that is already waiting for you.
