This bedtime prayer is for a caregiver at the end of a long day of tending to someone else’s needs. Pray it in the quiet hours before sleep, once the medications are sorted, the last call has been answered, and there is finally a moment to set the day down. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words what is on your heart tonight.

Bedtime Prayer for a Caregiver

Lord, I come to You at the close of this day, tired in body and heavier in heart than I expected. I have been watching over someone who depends on me, counting pills, lifting, listening, and wondering whether I did enough. Tonight I give You the things I could not fix. I give You the appointments I rescheduled, the sleep I did not get, and the moments I snapped when I was running on empty. Forgive me where I fell short, and receive my weariness as an honest offering.

Thank You for the small mercies that came today: a good meal that was eaten, a laugh that broke through the fog, a doctor who listened. Thank You that I am not the only one who sees the person I love. Stay near to them tonight while I rest. Guard their breathing, ease their pain, and let them sleep without fear. Keep the door, the phone and the medicine cabinet safe, and let me wake to a fresh measure of strength in the morning. Hold me when I cannot hold myself together. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am worn out and I am not sure I have anything left to give. Take what I could not finish today and carry it for me. Watch over the one I care for while I sleep, and steady my hands for whatever comes tomorrow. Remind me that I am loved even when I feel like I am failing. Let me rest in that truth tonight. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks this invitation to people who are exhausted and burdened. Caregivers often carry loads no one else sees, so pray this verse as a direct answer to your own tiredness, asking Him to take the weight you were never meant to carry alone.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This psalm reminds us that rest is a gift God gives to those He loves, even when work is endless. Pray it as permission to sleep, trusting that the night does not depend on your vigilance alone.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

The psalmist describes a God who never sleeps and never slumbers. Pray these words over the person you care for, and over yourself, asking that the One who keeps watch through the dark would keep you both safe until morning.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Isaiah speaks of God giving power to the faint and strength to those who have none. Pray this verse when you feel you have reached the bottom of your reserves, asking Him to supply what you cannot produce on your own.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul encourages believers not to grow weary in doing good. Pray this at night when the work feels unseen, asking God to keep your heart steady and to remind you that faithful love is never wasted in His sight.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time just before you go to bed, after the last check on the person you care for. Sit on the edge of the bed or in a favorite chair, and keep something near your hands, such as a cup of tea, a rosary, or a simple paper with the prayer written on it. Holding something physical can help a tired mind stay with the words instead of drifting back to the to-do list.

If you have a friend, family member, or pastor who can share the load, ask them to pray this prayer with you by phone or in person. Some caregivers find it helpful to pray it together once a week, so that the burden is spoken aloud and carried by more than one pair of hands. Whatever helps you rest is worth doing.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who never sleeps watch over you and the one you love tonight. May He grant you deep and quiet rest, and may you wake to find His mercies new as the morning. Go in peace, knowing that your faithfulness is seen.
