This short prayer for a church leader is for the moments when you want to lift up a pastor, elder, deacon, worship leader or ministry volunteer and do not know where to begin. Pray it on a Sunday morning before service, during the week when a leader is carrying a hard decision, or whenever their name comes to mind. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayer for a Church Leader

Lord, I thank you for the men and women who lead your church. They sit up late preparing messages, answer phone calls that come at odd hours, and carry the names of people who are struggling. Some of them are tired in ways no one else sees. I ask you to give them rest that is real, the kind that lets them sleep through the night and wake up glad to serve. Refresh their bodies, their families, and the quiet places in their hearts where discouragement settles.

Give them wisdom for the decisions in front of them, especially the ones that have no easy answer. Where they feel unsure, speak clearly. Where they feel criticized, remind them who they are serving and who sees their faithfulness. Protect them from pride when things go well and from despair when they do not. Keep their marriages strong, their children close to you, and their own walk with you warm and steady. Let their teaching and their care point people toward Jesus rather than toward themselves. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, bless the leader on my mind today. Give them strength for what is in front of them, wisdom for what they cannot yet see, and peace that does not depend on how the week goes. Keep them close to you, and let your grace be enough for them. Thank you for the way they point me back to you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Hebrews 13:17

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch on behalf of your souls, as those who will give account, that they may do this with joy, and not with groaning, for that would be unprofitable for you.

(WEB)

Pray that your leader would lead with joy rather than dread. Ask God to give them a clear conscience and a sense that their work is seen. You can also ask that the people they serve would make their work a gift and not a burden.

Ephesians 6:18-19

18 With all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit, and being watchful to this end in all perseverance and requests for all the saints: 19 on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in opening my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the Good News…

(WEB)

Paul asked the churches to pray for him, and this verse gives you the words to do the same. Pray that your leader would have boldness to speak the truth clearly and gently. Ask God to open their mouth when they teach and to guard their heart when they are tempted to hold back.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-13

12 But we beg you, brothers, to know those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you, 13 and to respect and honor them in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.

(WEB)

This passage reminds the church to honor those who labor among them. As you pray, ask God to help you respect your leader in both word and deed. Pray that you would notice their work and thank them for it, not only when something goes wrong.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Your leader is building something that matters, but the psalm says the building belongs to the Lord. Pray that they would release the outcome to God each morning. Ask him to be the builder and the guard, so that your leader can work with open hands.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

When a leader feels worn out, this promise speaks directly to the weariness. Pray that God would give power to the faint and renewed strength to the one who waits on him. Ask him to lift your leader up in the seasons when they feel they have nothing left to give.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time that fits your rhythm. Many people find it helpful to pray for their church leaders early in the morning, before the day’s demands arrive, or on Sunday before the service begins. Keep a short list of names on a card or in your phone, and work through it slowly, so that each person gets real attention and not a rushed mention.

It also helps to pray with your hands busy or still, whichever suits you. Some people write the leader’s name on a note and place it in their Bible, while others hold a cup of coffee and let the warmth remind them to keep praying. If you are part of a small group or a family, invite others to pray the same words aloud, so your leader is carried by more than one voice.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your pastor and keep them. May he make his face shine upon them and be gracious to them. May he lift his countenance on them and give them peace that steadies every step they take in his service.
