This simple prayer is written for the moment when a friend is discouraged, worn down by disappointment, illness, grief, or a season that seems to offer no relief. You can pray it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words. It works well in a quiet moment, on the phone before or after a conversation, or while sitting beside your friend.

Simple Prayer for a Discouraged Friend

Father, you see the friend I am thinking of today. You know the weight they have been carrying, the days that feel long and the nights that feel longer. You know the things they have stopped hoping for and the questions they are afraid to ask out loud. Be near to them now. Let them feel that they are not alone in this room, in this car, in this quiet kitchen where they sit with their worry.

Lift the heaviness from their shoulders, even if only a little at a time. Give them rest that reaches past tiredness, and let sleep come when they need it. Where fear has crowded out their courage, bring them back to the truth that you are still good and still at work. Remind them of a faithful memory when the present feels empty. Help them take one small, honest step forward today, and give them people who will listen without rushing them.

Thank you that your love does not depend on how strong my friend feels today. Hold them when they cannot hold on. Speak peace into the places where discouragement has settled, and let them know, in ways they can recognize, that you have not forgotten them. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my friend is discouraged, and I cannot fix what is weighing on them. Be close to them right now. Give them a breath of peace, a glimpse of your faithfulness, and the strength to take the next small step. Let them feel your nearness even before the feeling of hope returns. Thank you that you are with them in this. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming your friend’s specific heartache, then asking God to draw near to that exact wound. It reminds you that discouragement does not put your friend beyond God’s reach, and that he is especially near when a person feels crushed in spirit.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God to give your friend strength where their own strength has run out. Pray that they would not be left to depend on willpower alone, but would receive fresh energy from the Lord who never grows weary.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Read this passage slowly over your friend and ask that they would sense how nothing in their present circumstances can separate them from God’s love. Pray that this truth would steady them when their feelings tell them otherwise.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray these words for your friend when they feel that their situation will never change. Ask God to renew their hope each morning, so that they can meet the day with fresh mercy rather than dread.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Bring your friend’s anxieties to God in prayer, and ask that his peace would guard their heart and mind. This verse is a gentle invitation to lay down the constant effort of carrying every worry alone.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time of day when your friend is most likely to be receptive, perhaps early in the morning or in the evening before they go to bed. Sit somewhere quiet and keep your hands open in your lap or resting on the table, which can help you pray slowly rather than rushing through the words. If you are praying for your friend while they are with you, consider holding their hand or placing a hand on their shoulder with their permission.

You do not have to pray this alone. Ask another person who loves your friend to pray the same words, or invite a small group to pray together on their behalf. Let your friend know you have prayed for them, and check in with a short message or a simple call. Sometimes the most encouraging part of prayer is hearing that someone else has been holding them before God.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your friend and keep them in his care. May he lift their face toward the light and give them peace that steadies their heart. May they know, even in the hard hours, that they are loved, seen, and not forgotten, and may hope rise again within them, one faithful step at a time.
