This bedtime prayer is written for a new father who is trying to rest after long days of feeding, soothing, and worrying over a newborn. Pray it at the end of the day, once the house is quiet or while you are lying awake, and let it release the weight you have carried since morning. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Bedtime Prayer for a New Father

Father, the day is ending, and I am handing it back to you. I have been up and down through the night more times than I can count, and I am tired in a way that sleep alone does not seem to fix. Thank you for the small mercies of this day: the first cry that turned into a sigh, the warmth of a sleeping child against my chest, the quiet moment with my wife when neither of us had to say anything. Forgive me for the impatience that crept in when I was worn out, and for the times I wished I knew more than I do.

Lord, I confess that I worry about being enough. I wonder whether I am holding him right, whether I will provide well, whether I will still have patience tomorrow. Take those worries from my hands tonight. Remind me that you are the one who first made a father’s heart and who gives strength when mine runs low. Steady my wife and steady our home. Guard our baby while we sleep, and give us both rest that is deep enough to restore us. Keep watch over us through the dark hours, and let me wake to a new morning with a fresh measure of grace.

Thank you that I do not have to carry this season alone. Hold me as I close my eyes, and hold my family in your care until morning. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am spent and I need you. Take the worry of this day and give me rest. Watch over my wife and our child tonight, and make me faithful in the hours ahead. Thank you for being near when I feel unsure. Let me sleep in your peace. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when exhaustion is pressing in. Thank God that rest is his gift, and ask him to let you receive it without guilt for the hours you cannot work or fix everything yourself.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you lie down. Bring your weariness to Jesus by name, and tell him specifically which parts of new fatherhood have left you most drained tonight.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Let this verse shape your prayer for the night. Ask God to keep watch over your sleeping child and your family while you cannot, trusting that he never tires or dozes off.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Use this verse to close your day with trust. Speak it as a declaration that you can lie down and sleep because the Lord alone makes you dwell in safety.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this when anxious thoughts keep you awake. Name each worry you are carrying about the baby, your work, or your marriage, and ask God to guard your heart and mind with his peace.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer after the last feeding or the final check on the baby, while the room is dim and the house has settled. Sit on the edge of the bed or stand by the crib with one hand resting on the rail or on your wife’s shoulder. Physical stillness helps a tired mind slow down, so let your body be quiet even if your thoughts are not yet.

If you are sharing the night with your wife, pray it together or take turns reading the lines aloud. Invite her to add a sentence about her own worries and thanks. Many new fathers find that praying with their partner builds unity during a demanding season, and it reminds both of you that you are on the same team under God.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep watch over you tonight. May he give you rest that reaches the bone, and wake you refreshed for the work of love ahead. May your child sleep safely, your home stay peaceful, and your heart be quieted by the nearness of God.
