This short prayer is for the moment when a friend is grieving and you want to bring them before God but do not know what to say. Pray it when you sit with them, when you text them late at night, or when their loss is on your mind in the quiet of your morning. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or you can use it as a starting point and speak in your own words where your heart leads you.

Short Prayer for a Grieving Friend

Lord, you see the empty chair at the table, the phone that no longer rings with that familiar voice, and the small things that catch in the throat without warning. You know the name of the person they lost and every memory that now aches. Be near to my friend in this grief. When the days feel too long and the nights feel longer, remind them that they are not alone and that you have not turned away from them.

Give them rest when their mind will not stop replaying the last conversation or the hospital room. Let someone bring a meal to their door, and give them the courage to accept it. Help them to cry when they need to cry and to laugh when laughter comes back, without guilt about either one. Hold the person they miss in your care, and let my friend feel your comfort reaching them through the people who love them.

Father, I ask that you would carry what my friend cannot carry right now. Be their strength when they feel weak and their hope when they cannot see any. Keep them steady through the coming weeks and months, when others have gone back to their own lives. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my friend is hurting and I do not have the words. Be close to them right now. Hold them when they cannot hold themselves, and let them feel your peace in the middle of the ache. Remind them of your love, and help me to be the kind of friend who shows up with patience and a listening ear. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by asking God to draw near to your friend in the places where their heart feels most broken. Let it remind you that nearness to the grieving is one of the things God is known for.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God to bind up the wounds your friend is carrying. Pray that healing would come slowly and genuinely, in whatever shape God chooses.

Matthew 5:4

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

(WEB)

Read this promise of comfort aloud over your friend’s name. Ask the Lord to let them experience his comfort in ways that are real to them, even when the sorrow still runs deep.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Pray this passage for your friend’s sense of security. Ask that nothing, not even this loss, would convince them that God’s love has left them.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(WEB)

Pray that your friend would know the God who comforts, and that in time they might be able to offer the same comfort to someone else. Ask God to use your own presence as part of that comfort.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time of day, such as early morning with a cup of coffee or the few minutes before you fall asleep. Keep a small note on your phone with your friend’s name, so that when you think of them during your day you can pause and pray. Some people find it helpful to hold something in their hands while they pray, like a cup, a pen, or a smooth stone, as a physical reminder to keep coming back to this person.

You can also invite others to pray this prayer with you, whether that is a spouse, a small group, or a prayer partner from church. Let your friend know you are praying, and ask whether there is anything specific they would like you to lift up. Sometimes a grieving person simply needs to know that someone is still holding them in mind weeks after the funeral.

A Blessing to Close

May the God of all comfort surround your friend with his steady presence. May they find rest for their weary heart, company for their lonely hours, and hope that slowly grows in the soil of their sorrow. May the Lord keep them, sustain them, and bring them through this season toward the light he has promised.
