This evening prayer is for the night before or during the first weeks of a new semester, when the schedule feels full and the mind will not slow down. Pray it at bedtime, once the books are closed and the alarm is set, and let it carry your worries from the day into God’s hands. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words where something more specific is on your heart.

Evening Prayer for a New Semester

Lord, the day is ending, and I am bringing it to you. There were new classes, new faces, and a long list of things I do not yet know how to do. Thank you for every small kindness today, for the teacher who explained something clearly, and for the friend who saved me a seat. Thank you that I did not have to face any of it alone.

Now my mind keeps running ahead to next week: the first exam, the reading I have not started, the group project I am nervous about, and the money and time I am trying to stretch. Quiet my thoughts, Father. Remind me that you already know my schedule and my fears, and that you are not surprised by any of it. Help me take the next step tomorrow instead of trying to climb the whole mountain tonight.

Watch over me while I sleep. Give me rest that actually refreshes my body and my heart, and protect me from the anxious dreams that tend to come with a new term. Keep my family, my roommates, and the people I will meet tomorrow in your care. Whatever I learn this semester, let me remember that my worth does not rise and fall with my grades. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired and the new semester is loud in my head. Slow my thoughts down and help me rest in you. I give you tomorrow’s classes, the work I am worried about, and the people I will see. Thank you for today. Keep me safe tonight and give me enough courage for the morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you lie down, letting the words slow your breathing. Ask God to make you safe enough to sleep, even when the semester’s demands are still waiting for you in the morning.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse reminds you that striving without rest is not the way God designed life. Bring your study plans to him and ask for wisdom to work hard without losing sleep over every assignment.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage to hand over the specific worries you carry about grades, money, and friendships. Name each one before God, thank him for something in the middle of it, and then ask for the peace that guards your heart.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and imagine Jesus inviting you personally to set down your burdens. Tell him which of your loads feels heaviest tonight, and ask him to teach you how to walk with him through the term.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a reminder that each morning of the semester brings fresh mercy. Thank God that yesterday’s mistakes do not get the final word, and ask him to renew your strength for tomorrow.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer at the end of the day, ideally in the same place each night, such as your bed or a chair by a window. Before you begin, put your planner or syllabus face down or on the other side of the room so your hands are free and your eyes are not tempted to keep working. Holding a cup of tea or resting your hand on your chest can help you stay present as you speak.

If you live with roommates or family, consider inviting one of them to pray it with you on the first week, or to say the blessing at the end of the prayer over you. A parent, a mentor, or a friend from your church can also pray the prayer for you, changing the “I” to “she” or “he” and speaking it over you as a gift.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord guard your going out and your coming in as this new semester begins. May he give you rest tonight, clear thinking tomorrow, and a steady heart for every class and conversation ahead. May you know, in each hard moment, that you are held by a God who never sleeps and never leaves.
