This evening prayer is for the close of a day that marks the start of a new year, when the calendar has turned but the weight of the old year may still be in your hands. Pray it at bedtime or in the quiet hours after dark, as you hand the day and the year ahead to God. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Evening Prayer for a New Year

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you. I am tired, and some of the things I hoped for this year are still unsettled. I think about the resolutions I made, the goals I am already behind on, and the fears I carry about money, health, work, and the people I love. Help me set them down now, because I cannot carry all of them into a new year on my own.

Thank you for the ordinary gifts of this day: the warm meal, the work that got done, the conversation that made me laugh, the moment of quiet I did not expect. Thank you for keeping me through the year that has just ended, through the mistakes I would rather forget and the seasons I did not think I would survive. Let me remember your faithfulness as I look ahead.

Be my rest tonight. Guard my sleep and quiet my mind so I do not rehearse tomorrow before it arrives. Watch over the people I love while they sleep, and over the doors and roads they will walk through in the days to come. Whatever this new year holds, let me meet it with a trusting heart rather than a clenched one. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, it is late and this new year has begun. I give you the day that is ending and the year that is ahead. Quiet my worries, forgive what I got wrong, and keep me and the people I love through the night. Help me wake tomorrow ready to trust you one day at a time. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you lie down. It names the peace God gives for sleep, and you can pray it as a plain statement of trust for the night ahead of you.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

When the new year feels uncertain, this passage reminds you that God does not doze while you rest. Pray it for yourself and for anyone who is awake worrying tonight.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray these verses as you think back over the old year. They point to God’s mercy being renewed each morning, which means each new day in the year carries fresh grace.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your fatigue and your burdens to Jesus in these words. Let the invitation be personal, and pray it as an honest admission that you cannot carry everything alone.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage to hand over the anxieties you named earlier in the prayer. Ask God for the peace that guards the heart and mind, and let that peace settle you before you sleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer at the end of the day, after the last task is done and the lights are low. A bedside chair, the edge of your bed, or a quiet corner of the kitchen works well. Keep a pen and paper nearby so you can write down the worries you name, then place the paper somewhere out of sight as a physical sign that you have given them to God for the night.

You might also invite someone to pray it with you, such as a spouse, a roommate, or a friend who is also starting the year in uncertainty. Read it aloud together, taking turns with the paragraphs, and close by praying for each other’s first morning of the new year. Keeping a short written list of what you prayed can help you return to it in the weeks ahead.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep you through the night and bring you into this new year with a settled heart. May his peace rest on your mind and his faithfulness meet you each morning. Whatever the coming months bring, may you walk through them knowing you are held.
