This bedtime prayer for a nurse is written for the quiet hours after a long shift, when the body is tired and the mind keeps replaying the day. Pray it at the end of the day, whether you are home in bed, sitting in the car before walking inside, or lying awake after a double. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Bedtime Prayer for a Nurse

Lord, thank You for this day and for the strength You gave me to get through it. I carried other people’s fear, pain and hope from one room to the next, and I did not always get to finish what I started. Some patients are better tonight and some are not. Some families are still waiting for news, and some of my mistakes are still sitting heavy on my heart. I lay all of it down before You now, the things I did well and the things I wish I had done differently.

Be with the patients I cared for today. Hold the ones who are in pain and the ones who are frightened, and give the night staff wisdom and steady hands. Watch over the families sitting in plastic chairs, and comfort anyone who is grieving tonight. Keep the people on the next shift alert and kind to each other. Give me rest that is real, not just a closed door, so that my sleep restores me and I do not lie awake running through every chart and every number. Guard my body and my mind until morning, and let me wake ready for whatever comes next. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am worn out, and I am giving You this shift, the people I looked after, and the worries I can not fix by myself. Watch over my patients tonight and over the team on duty. Let me sleep without guilt about what I could not do. Keep me safe on the drive home and rested when I wake. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

When your mind will not slow down after a hard shift, this verse invites you to stop and let God be God over the things you cannot control. Pray it slowly, letting each phrase settle before you move to the next.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks to the weary, and nurses know that feeling well. Pray this verse by naming the particular exhaustion you feel tonight and bringing it to Him as you would set down a heavy bag.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse is a bedtime psalm in its own right. Pray it as you lie down, asking God to give you the safe, unhurried sleep that you may not have had on shift.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

God gives strength to the weary and increases power to those who have none. Pray this for the moment when you feel you have nothing left, asking Him to renew what your body and spirit have spent.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse reminds you that the work does not depend only on your effort. Pray it as a way of loosening your grip on the outcomes you were never meant to carry alone.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this on the drive home or in the shower before bed, while your hands are busy with something ordinary. Some nurses find it helps to sit on the edge of the bed with their shoes off, breathing slowly between sentences. If the day included a loss or a hard conversation, pause at that point in the prayer and speak the patient’s name or the family’s name out loud.

You could also ask a spouse, roommate or friend on another shift to pray it with you by phone or over coffee the next morning. A prayer partner who knows the work can pick up the thread when you are too tired to finish a sentence. Keep a copy of the prayer in your phone’s notes so it is always within reach after a long shift.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over every ward and every night shift keep watch over you. May He give you rest that reaches deeper than sleep, and may you wake knowing you were seen, held and cared for by the One who never clocks out.
