This night prayer is written for a prayer group to pray together at the end of the day, when the meeting is winding down and everyone is ready to rest. It helps the group release the day’s burdens, ask for protection through the night, and give thanks before sleep. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and needs of the people in your circle.

Night Prayer for a Prayer Group

Lord, we come to you at the close of this day, tired and grateful. Some of us carried heavy things today: a diagnosis we are still learning to hold, a job that is uncertain, a child who did not come home the way we hoped, a marriage that needs patience we do not always have. We bring those things to you now, one by one, and we set them down at your feet. Take what we cannot carry through the night.

We thank you for the people sitting around this table or gathered on this call. Thank you for the courage it took for each of us to speak our needs out loud, and for the way you have met us here. Keep watch over every home represented in this group tonight. Guard the sleeping and the sick, the ones who lie awake, and the ones who are alone. Give rest to our bodies and quiet to our minds, and let our last thoughts before sleep be of your goodness. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, the day is done, and we are grateful you were with us in it. We give you what we could not finish, what we did not say well, and what still weighs on us. Hold our group and the people we love through this night. Keep the house quiet, the doors secure, and our hearts at rest in you. Wake us to a new morning with fresh mercy. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly at the start of the prayer and let the group settle into it. Pray that God would give each person a sleep that is truly restful, not just a pause from worry.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Use this verse to name the things you have been working at too hard. Ask God to take over what is beyond your strength and to teach your group to receive his care.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Pray this over the homes and families of your group members. Thank God that his watchfulness does not pause when we fall asleep, and ask for that same protection on those who are far away.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

When the day has been hard, this verse reminds the group that mercy is renewed each morning. Ask God to let each person wake to fresh compassion, whatever yesterday held.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Let the group rest in Jesus’s invitation before ending the prayer. Ask that anyone carrying weariness tonight would bring it to him and not hide it.

How to Pray This Prayer

Gather at the close of your meeting, when the lights are low and the chairs are pulled in. Begin with a few moments of silence so everyone can slow down. Then read the main prayer aloud, pausing after each paragraph so anyone can add names or needs before moving on. Holding hands or passing a candle around the circle can give people something to do with their hands while they listen.

If your group meets online, ask each person to name one thing they are releasing for the night, then have one person read the prayer and everyone else say “Amen” at the end. Anyone who cannot stay awake for the whole thing can pray the shorter version quietly before bed on their own.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep each member of this group in his care tonight. May he grant sleep that restores body and spirit, and may his peace guard every heart and home represented here. Whatever tomorrow asks of you, may you wake knowing you were held through the night.
