This simple prayer is written for a prayer group that meets to bring its needs, its thanks and its people before God together. It works well at the start of a meeting to settle hearts, or near the end to gather up what has been shared. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and concerns of your own group.

Simple Prayer for a Prayer Group

Lord, we come together today because you have invited us to bring our burdens to you and to each other. Some of us arrived tired from work, some carrying worry about a child, a parent or a diagnosis, and some simply glad to be in a room where we can say what is true. Quiet the noise in our hearts so that we can hear you. Help us to listen to one another without rushing to fix, and to speak honestly without fear of being judged.

We ask you to be near to each person here and to each name we have written on our list. Where there is grief, be the comfort that does not run out. Where there is uncertainty, give steady ground for the next step. Where there is joy, let us celebrate it with real gladness. Teach us to pray for one another’s good, not only for our own relief, and make us a group that loves well because it has first been loved by you.

Thank you that you hear us even when our words are few. Keep us faithful to meet, faithful to pray and faithful to follow up on what we have shared. We give you this time, these people and these needs. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, thank you for gathering us here. Be present with each person and each concern we have brought. Give us patience to listen, honesty to speak and love to carry one another’s burdens. Help us trust that you are already at work in the things we cannot see. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Matthew 18:20

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them.”

(WEB)

Jesus promises that his presence comes to those who gather in his name. Pray this verse at the start of your meeting to remind the group that the Lord is among you, even when the room is small and the group feels ordinary.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul links prayer and thanksgiving with the peace of God guarding the heart. Read this slowly with the group, then invite each person to name one worry they are handing over rather than carrying home.

Galatians 6:2

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

(WEB)

This verse calls believers to carry one another’s burdens. Pray it over the specific needs shared in your circle, asking God to show each member practical ways to help the person beside them.

James 5:16

Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.

(WEB)

James commends prayer offered by righteous people and points to its power. Pray this verse to ask God for courage to be open with one another and for trust that your prayers matter together.

Romans 12:15

Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.

(WEB)

Paul tells the church to rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep. Use this verse to pray for balanced hearts that can celebrate good news and sit honestly with sorrow in the same meeting.

How to Pray This Prayer

Read the main prayer aloud at the beginning of your meeting, pausing after each paragraph so that people can add their own requests silently or out loud. If your group is large, you might ask one person to read it and another to lead the closing. Keeping a small pad or a shared note nearby helps you record names and needs so that the prayer carries forward into the week.

Pray it in a place where everyone can see one another, such as around a table or in a loose circle of chairs. Some groups hold hands, others rest a hand on a Bible, and some simply sit with open palms on their knees as a sign of receiving. Invite whoever feels led to pray the shorter version when someone shares an urgent need mid-meeting, so the group can respond right away.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who meets with two or three of his people go before each of you this week. May he steady your hearts, strengthen your hands for the work he has given you and surround every name spoken today with his quiet, faithful care. Go in peace, and carry one another well.
