This bedtime prayer is for the moment when the day is finally over and your mind will not slow down. It gives you words to bring God the day’s weight, ask for real rest, and entrust the hours of darkness to him. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words once you are lying still.

Bedtime Prayer for a Restful Night

Lord, the day is ending, and I am bringing it to you. I think about the things I did well and the things I did badly, the conversations I replay, the messages I still have not answered, and the worries about tomorrow that keep sneaking back in. I set all of it down in your hands. Take what I could not finish and forgive what I got wrong. Let me rest in the truth that you have not stopped working while I sleep.

Quiet my thoughts and calm the racing in my chest. If my body is tired but my mind will not switch off, slow me down with your peace. Watch over my home and the people sleeping under this roof. Guard them from fear and from harm, and keep the house quiet enough for everyone to sleep. Thank you for the good parts of today, the small kindnesses and the ordinary blessings I almost overlooked. Let me wake up refreshed and ready to receive whatever the morning brings. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired and my mind is still busy. I hand you today and everything I am carrying into tomorrow. Settle my heart, quiet my thoughts, and keep me and the people I love safe through this night. Thank you for being awake when I cannot be. Give me rest that is real and deep, and let me wake to your mercy again. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let it become a statement you make to God. Say it as a declaration that you will lie down in peace because the Lord is the one who keeps you safe. Pause after each phrase and let your body respond.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

When you feel you must keep working, worrying, or planning in order to hold your life together, pray this verse as a release. Ask God to remind you that rest is a gift he gives to those he loves, not a reward you must earn.

Psalm 3:5

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of lying down and waking again under God’s sustaining care. Pray it over the hours ahead, thanking God that he is the one who holds you when you cannot hold yourself up.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary to come to him. Bring your exhaustion to him by name, telling him specifically what is wearing you down, and ask him to give you the rest only he can offer.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use these verses to take each anxious thought to God in prayer, naming it aloud as you lie in the dark. Ask for the peace that guards your heart and mind so that worry loses its grip on the night.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer after you have brushed your teeth and turned off the bright lights, once you are in bed or sitting on the edge of it. Keep a lamp on low if the dark makes you uneasy. Place a hand on your chest or on your pillow as you speak, which can help a restless body settle into the words.

If you share a home, consider praying the shorter version together with a spouse, a child, or a roommate, taking turns with a sentence each. You might also keep a small notebook by the bed and write down the worries you are handing over, so your mind does not have to hold them all night long.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give you rest that reaches past your tired body into your heart. May he keep watch over you and everyone sleeping near you, and may his peace stand guard over your mind until morning. Sleep well, knowing you are held.
