This short morning prayer is for asking God’s protection over a trip, whether it is the drive to work, a flight, a long road trip, or a walk to the train station. Pray it before you leave the house, while you still have a cup of coffee in your hand and the day has not yet pulled you in a dozen directions. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names of the people and places on your mind.
Short Morning Prayer for a Safe Journey
Lord, I am about to leave, and I do not know everything that will happen between here and where I am going. I know the roads, the traffic, the weather, and the other drivers and travelers around me are beyond my control. Please go ahead of me on this trip. Watch over the car, the train, or the plane, and keep my hands steady on the wheel or the bags. Keep my eyes sharp and my mind clear, so that I notice what I need to notice and do not get distracted by my phone, my worries, or my own impatience.
I also bring before you the people I will meet today and the people I am leaving behind. Be with the person I am driving with or the one waiting for me at the other end. If anyone around me is tired, frightened, or in a hurry, give them grace, and give me patience when I am tempted to be short with them. Let my going out and my coming back be marked by your peace. Teach me to trust you with what I cannot see, and let this trip be one more place where I learn that you are faithful.
Thank you for the gift of this new day and for the freedom to go where I need to go. Remind me that you are near in the car, on the platform, in the airport, and on the sidewalk. Bring me home safely, and in every mile, let me remember that you are the one who keeps me. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am heading out now, and I ask for your protection over me and everyone I will pass today. Guard my steps and my focus, and keep the people I love safe while I am gone. Make me careful, calm, and kind to those I meet along the way. Bring me back to this door at the end of the day. Amen.

Read this before you start the engine or step onto the platform. Pray that the Lord would guard your going out and your coming in, not just for this trip but for the whole day ahead of you.
Psalm 91:11
For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.
(WEB)
Use this verse to ask for God’s angels to be near you on the road or in transit. Pray it for the specific journey you are making, naming the route or the mode of travel so the words feel personal.
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
(WEB)
When the day feels uncertain, pray this to surrender your plans and your timing to God. Ask him to make your path straight where you cannot see far ahead, and to help you lean on him instead of your own anxiety.
Isaiah 41:10
Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.
(WEB)
Bring this promise into your morning when you feel nervous about a long drive, a flight, or an unfamiliar place. Pray that God would strengthen your heart and remind you that he is with you wherever you go.
Psalm 139:7-10
7 Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there! 9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.
(WEB)
Pray this passage to remember that there is no place you can travel where God is absent. Ask him to lead you on the road ahead, and to let his hand hold you steady, whether you are going across town or across the country.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray this prayer while you are still at home, before you pick up your keys, bag, or phone. Sit for a moment with your coffee or your car keys in your hand, and let the words settle before the rush of the morning begins. If you are someone who drives every day, you might keep a short version of the prayer taped to the dashboard or saved on your phone to read at a red light.
You can also pray this with someone else. A spouse, child, roommate, or friend who is traveling with you can say it together, or one person can pray aloud while the other person places a hand on a bag, a steering wheel, or a travel itinerary as a physical reminder of what you are asking for. Pray it again for the return trip, so that the whole journey is held before God from start to finish.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you and behind you on every road you take today. May he keep your going out and your coming in, and may you arrive wherever you are headed with a heart at rest. May his peace be the companion you carry through the whole day, and may you return home knowing that you were held the entire way.
