This simple prayer for a veteran is written for anyone who wants to lift up a man or woman who has served in the armed forces, whether that service was recent or decades ago. It works well at a bedside, over a kitchen table on Veterans Day, or during a quiet morning before the day gets busy. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Simple Prayer for a Veteran

Lord, thank You for the men and women who answered a call to serve, often leaving home, family and familiar comforts behind. We ask You to walk with this veteran today. Where memories of combat, training or long deployments still press in at night, be near. Quiet the noise in their mind, and give them rest that sleep alone cannot provide.

Father, some of the wounds they carry cannot be seen. Bring healing to bodies that were injured in service, and to hearts that have had to bury friends or set down the weight of hard decisions. Give them people who listen without judging, and the courage to ask for help when they need it. Surround them with a community that understands what they have given.

We also ask You to provide for them in the ordinary things: steady work, a home with peace in it, good health care, and relationships that feel safe and warm. Remind them that their worth was never measured only by what they did in uniform. Thank You for their faithfulness, and let them know today that they are seen and honored. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, bless this veteran right now. Steady their heart, ease the memories that are hard to carry, and let them feel Your presence close by. Give them rest, a sense of purpose, and people who care for them well. Thank You for their service and their sacrifice. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:1-2

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas…

(WEB)

Pray this slowly for a veteran who feels unsafe in their own thoughts. Ask God to be the refuge they can run to when fear or memory rises up, and to remain steady when everything else feels unsteady.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Use this verse to speak courage over someone who has faced danger before and may still feel vulnerable. Pray that they would hear God’s reassurance that He is with them and will strengthen them for each day ahead.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

This verse is a comfort for a veteran carrying grief over lost friends or lasting injury. Ask the Lord to draw near to the brokenhearted and to meet them in the places where they hurt most.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Pray this for someone who has been carrying heavy burdens for years without a break. Ask Jesus to invite them into rest, and for the willingness to set down what they were never meant to carry alone.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Read this over a veteran who wonders whether they are truly loved or forgiven after what they saw or did. Pray that they would know nothing can separate them from God’s love in Christ Jesus.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer in the early morning or late evening, when the house is quiet and there is time to slow down. If you are sitting with a veteran, you might hold their hand or place a hand on their shoulder while you speak. If you are praying alone for someone who is far away, keep a photo or a small flag nearby to remind you who you are lifting up.

Consider inviting other people to pray with you, such as family members, a small group, or a chaplain at a local church or VA facility. Shared prayer can remind a veteran that they are not carrying their story alone. Afterward, you may want to write a short note or make a call to let them know you prayed for them.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this veteran and keep them safe in every season. May He turn their memories toward healing, their weariness toward rest, and their service toward the good of those they love. May they know, deep down, that they are honored and that God is near.
