This prayer is for the church you belong to, its leaders, its members and its mission in the community. It is well suited to Sunday mornings before worship, to midweek prayer gatherings, or to a quiet moment at home when the church comes to mind. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words what you know about your congregation.

Prayer for Our Church

Lord, you are the head of the church, and we belong to you before we belong to any building, program or committee. We thank you for the people who gather here, for the ones who have been with us for decades and the ones who walked through the doors for the first time last week. Be present with each of them. Where someone is grieving, sit with them. Where someone is worried about a job, a diagnosis or a child who has stepped away from faith, hold them close and remind them they are not forgotten.

We ask you to give our pastors and elders wisdom for the decisions in front of them, and the stamina to keep going when the work feels thin. Protect them from pride and from discouragement. Give our teachers patience with the restless kids on Sunday morning, and give our volunteers in the kitchen, the nursery and the parking lot a sense that their small faithful acts matter to you. Let our worship be honest and our preaching be true to your word. Keep us from forming cliques that leave newcomers standing alone at the coffee table.

Make us a people who love our neighbors in practical ways, who notice the lonely, feed the hungry and speak up for those who have no voice. Heal the divisions we have allowed to grow between us, and teach us to disagree with grace. Use this congregation to show the people of this town what you are like. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, bless our church today. Be with our pastors, our teachers and the families who sit in our pews. Heal what is broken among us, comfort those who are hurting, and draw in the people who have not yet found a place here. Make us a light in this community that points to you. Help us love one another well. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Matthew 16:18

I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by thanking Jesus that the church belongs to him and that its foundation rests on him, not on the strength of any one leader or program. It is a good verse to pray when the congregation feels small or uncertain.

Acts 2:42

They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer.

(WEB)

Ask God to make your church devoted to teaching, to fellowship, to sharing meals and to prayer, the same habits that marked the earliest believers. Name one of these practices and ask for it to grow in your congregation this year.

Ephesians 4:3

Being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

(WEB)

Pray for unity in the body of believers, that the Spirit would hold people together even when they differ in age, background and opinion. Ask God to help you be one of the people who makes peace rather than creating division.

1 Corinthians 12:12

For as the body is one, and has many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ.

(WEB)

Pray that every member of your church would recognize that they are needed and that no one is unimportant to the whole. Ask God to show each person in your congregation the gift they bring to the body.

Hebrews 10:24-25

24 Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good works, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as you see the Day approaching.

(WEB)

Pray that your church would stir one another toward love and good works, and that people would keep showing up for gathering together. Ask God to make your meetings a place of encouragement that people look forward to.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer early on a Sunday or the evening before worship, while the building is still quiet. If you can, go to the church itself and sit in a pew or walk the hallways as you pray, letting specific rooms and faces come to mind. Keep a pen nearby so you can write down names of people or needs that surface as you speak.

You can also pray it with others. Gather a few members for a short prayer meeting, read the main prayer aloud together, and let each person add one sentence about a need they know of. Praying with your hands open on your knees or holding the church directory can help keep the words grounded in real people rather than general wishes.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this congregation and keep each person who calls it home. May he make his face shine on the leaders who carry heavy responsibility, and on the newcomer who is still finding the way. May the church be a place of peace, love and steady hope for everyone who walks through its doors.
