This night prayer is for an expectant mother who is ending her day and preparing to sleep while carrying a child. It is meant to be prayed at bedtime, when the body is tired, the mind is still busy, and the worries of the coming birth tend to grow louder in the dark. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add your own words for the specific fears and thanks you hold tonight.

Night Prayer for an Expectant Mother

Father, the day is closing and I bring you my body, which is carrying a child and is more tired than it was this morning. I thank you for the small movements I felt today, for the strength that got me through the stairs, the errands, and the long hours on my feet. Tonight I give you the list I could not finish: the appointment I still need to schedule, the birth plan I have not finished reading, and the question of how I will manage when the baby is here. Hold those things for me so I do not have to hold them alone in the dark.

I confess the fear that comes at night, the what-ifs about labor, the health of my baby, and whether I am ready to be a mother. Replace that fear with your presence. Let my breathing slow and my heart settle, and let me rest in the truth that you know this child by name, that you formed every part of her or him, and that you have already gone ahead of us into the days to come. Guard us through the night, keep us safe from harm, and wake us with the mercy of a new morning.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and a little afraid tonight. Thank you for the child growing within me and for the strength you have given me today. Quiet my worries, settle my body into rest, and watch over my baby while I sleep. Remind me that you are near in the dark and that I do not have to face tomorrow’s unknowns on my own. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you lie down, letting the promise of peace and safety settle over both you and the baby. It is a reminder that rest is a gift God gives, not something you must earn by finishing every task first.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Read this slowly when you feel the pressure to keep working or worrying late into the night. Ask God to give you the rest he provides, trusting that he cares for you even when you stop striving.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Use this verse when fear of the unknown rises in the quiet hours. Let God’s promise to strengthen and help you become the thing you return to whenever anxiety about labor or parenthood starts to build.

Psalm 139:13-14

13 For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.

(WEB)

Pray this passage over your child, thanking God that he knit your baby together with care and purpose. It can steady you when you feel uncertain, reminding you that your child is fully known and wonderfully made.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Bring each specific worry to God in prayer, naming them one by one before you sleep. Ask him to guard your heart and mind with a peace that does not depend on having every answer ready.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer in your bed or in a comfortable chair after the lights are low and your phone is set aside. Many expectant mothers find it helpful to rest one hand on the belly while they speak, letting the touch remind them of the child and of the Lord who sees them both. If you wake during the night, you can return to the shorter version and pray it again while you breathe slowly.

Your partner, a close friend, or a family member can also pray this with you or over you. Ask them to read it aloud on a night when you feel too weary to find your own words. Sharing the prayer with someone who loves you can turn a lonely evening into a time of shared trust and gratitude.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over you and your child grant you deep and restful sleep tonight. May his peace guard your heart as your body does the quiet work of preparing for birth. May you wake to find his mercy new again, and may you walk into the coming days knowing you are loved and held.
