This evening prayer is for the end of a day when an important decision is still weighing on your mind. You can pray it at bedtime, in the quiet before sleep, or whenever the choice you face keeps you awake. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Evening Prayer for an Important Decision

Lord, the day is ending and the decision is still open. I have turned it over at the kitchen sink, in the car, and in every quiet moment, and I am tired of carrying it alone. I bring you the options in front of me, the people they will touch, and the fear that I will choose wrongly and regret it for years. Thank you that you already know the end of this story even when I cannot see the next step.

Tonight I ask you to settle my heart before I try to settle the question. Quiet the voices that push me one way or another, including my own. Show me what is true, what is wise, and what is merely urgent. Where I have been seeking reassurance more than guidance, gently redirect me toward your will. Give me enough light for the next step, and enough trust to take it without demanding the whole map.

As I lie down, I release the outcome into your hands. Guard my sleep, keep my mind from racing, and let me wake with a clearer head and a steadier heart. Whatever I decide tomorrow, let it come from prayer rather than panic, and help me believe that you are present in the choice and in the days that follow it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am stuck on this decision and I do not want to pretend otherwise. Calm my thoughts and show me the next honest step. Help me to hear you above my fear and my own preferences. Keep my heart open to your direction tonight, and let me rest in your care while I wait for clarity. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and pray it as a surrender of your own reasoning. Ask God to help you lean on his understanding rather than measuring every option by your own limited view.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Bring your uncertainty to God as a simple request. Ask him directly for wisdom, trusting that he gives it generously and does not scold you for needing it.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

Pray this as a promise that God intends to guide you. Ask him to instruct you and to keep your eyes on him rather than on the crowd of possible outcomes.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release the pressure to carry everything through your own effort. Ask God to grant you rest, especially on the nights when worry keeps you working long after the day is done.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Turn the anxious thoughts about your decision into specific requests before God. Then ask him to guard your heart and mind with a peace that does not depend on having all the answers yet.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet place near the end of the day, such as your bed, a favorite chair, or the edge of the couch with the lights dimmed. Keep a notebook beside you and write down the options and the reasons you keep returning to. Reading them aloud before you pray helps you hand the actual details to God rather than a vague sense of dread.

You might also invite someone you trust to pray this with you, a spouse, a friend, or a mentor who knows the situation. Hearing another voice speak your concerns to God can loosen the knot in your chest and remind you that you are not the only one carrying the decision. Ask them to pray for you again tomorrow if the question is still open.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who knows every option you face give you rest tonight and clarity in the morning. May he steady your thoughts, guard your sleep, and walk with you into whatever choice lies ahead. Go to sleep in his peace, and wake to his faithfulness.
