This bedtime prayer for caregivers is for the end of the day, when you have given your strength to someone else and have little left for yourself. Pray it at the close of the day, once the house is quiet or the medications are sorted, and before you lie down. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your day was harder or lighter than the prayer describes.

Bedtime Prayer for Caregivers

Father, the day is ending and I am tired in a way that sleep alone does not seem to fix. I have lifted, listened, measured doses, counted breaths, and answered the same questions more than once. I have carried worry about appointments, bills, and the person in my care, and some of it I could not put down even when I tried. Thank you that none of it has been hidden from you. Take from my hands now what I was never meant to hold alone, and show me which tasks can wait until morning.

Watch over the one I care for tonight. Give them rest that comes easily and pain that eases, and let the hours pass without fear or confusion. Keep my own body from breaking down under the weight of this work, and forgive me for the impatient word, the sigh I did not mean to let out, and the moments I wished the day were over. Where I was short with them, let my apology be enough and let them know they are loved. Give me grace for tomorrow, not all at once, but in the portion I need when I wake.

Guard my sleep and guard my mind. If sleep comes slowly, let my thoughts settle on what is true and good rather than on everything that could go wrong. Remind me that I am not the only one holding them, and that you are awake when I am not. I rest now in your care, trusting that you will keep watch through the night. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am spent and the night is here. Take my worries about tomorrow and my tiredness from today. Keep the one I care for safe until morning, and keep me from despairing over what I could not finish. Give me enough rest to meet the day that comes. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel you must stay up to finish everything. Ask God to give you rest, since the work you do is not the whole of what keeps life going, and he is the one who sustains it.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Read this slowly at the end of a hard day. Name the particular weight you are carrying tonight and bring it to Jesus as an invitation you are accepting, not a test you must pass first.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use this as a prayer for the night watch. Ask God to keep the person in your care from harm while you sleep, trusting that the one who does not slumber is still watching over them.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Pray this when your strength feels gone. Ask the Lord to give you power for tomorrow, since this verse speaks of strength given to the weary and weakness met by God’s own provision.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Bring the anxieties you carry at night into prayer, one by one, with thanksgiving for what has gone well. Ask for the peace that guards the heart and mind, especially when the worries return as you try to sleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed moment, such as after you have checked on the person in your care and before you turn off the light. Sitting on the edge of your bed or in a chair by the window works well, and resting a hand on your chest or holding a glass of water can give your body something to do while you pray. If you are too exhausted to speak, read the shorter version silently or let the prayer be said slowly, one sentence at a time.

If you share caregiving with a family member, a friend, or a faith community, consider asking one of them to pray this prayer over you, or to text you a verse before bed. Some caregivers keep a written copy of the prayer on the nightstand so it is ready on the nights they cannot find words. Let other people pray for you as well, since you were never meant to carry the night alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep watch over this caregiver tonight. May he grant them deep rest, quiet hours, and the assurance that their care is seen. May the one they care for sleep peacefully, and may morning bring fresh strength and mercy.
