This prayer is for the friendships your children are forming, keeping, or struggling to find. Pray it when you drop them at school, when they come home quiet after a hard day, or when you lie awake wondering who is sitting with them at lunch. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak more plainly in your own words.

Prayer for Children’s Friendships

Father, you know every child by name, and you know the playground, the bus, the group chat and the empty chair at the cafeteria table. We bring our children’s friendships to you. Give them kind and honest friends, people who tell the truth gently and who stay when things get hard. Where a friendship is good, deepen it. Where it is unkind or unsafe, show us what to do, and give our children the courage to step away without shame.

Protect them from the cruelty that spreads so easily among young people: the whispered rumor, the exclusion, the mocking that passes for humor. Teach them to notice when someone is left out and to make room for that person. If they feel lonely, meet them in that loneliness and remind them that they are never truly alone. Give them patience with themselves when they make mistakes, and the humility to ask forgiveness when they hurt someone else.

Shape their hearts so that they choose friends who draw them closer to you, and so that they become the kind of friend others are glad to find. Let their friendships be a place where they learn loyalty, generosity and grace. We trust you with these relationships, Lord, because you love our children more than we ever could. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, you see the friends my child has today and the ones she is hoping for. Give her a kind friend this week, and protect her from anyone who would hurt her. Help her to be kind to others, especially to the one standing alone. Make her a good friend, and let her feel your nearness when she feels left out. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 17:17

A friend loves at all times; and a brother is born for adversity.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over your child’s friendships by asking God to bring loyal companions into their life, people who stay with them in good times and hard ones. It also invites you to pray that your child will be that kind of friend to others.

Proverbs 18:24

A man of many companions may be ruined, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

(WEB)

Ask God to give your child a friend who sticks closer than a brother or sister might. Pray that your child will learn to build friendships that are steady and trustworthy, not only popular or convenient.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

Pray that your child will experience the good of working, playing and struggling alongside another person. Ask God to help them find a companion who lifts them up when they stumble.

1 Thessalonians 5:11

Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as you also do.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pray that your child will learn to encourage and build up their friends. Ask God to make their friendships places of comfort and growth rather than competition or criticism.

John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

(WEB)

Pray that your child will come to understand the depth of real friendship, a love willing to give and to sacrifice. Ask Jesus to form that kind of selflessness in their heart from an early age.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular moment, such as the drive to school, bedtime, or the few minutes after dinner when everyone is still at the table. Keep a photo of your child, or a note with the names of their friends, where you can see it while you pray. Praying with your child is especially powerful, so invite them to add their own requests for the people they care about.

Give your hands something to do while you pray, such as folding laundry, holding a cup of tea, or writing the names of your child’s friends on a card. If a friendship is in trouble, ask another parent, grandparent, or trusted friend to pray with you, and agree to keep returning to the request together over the weeks ahead.

A Blessing to Close

May God surround your child with friends who love them honestly and remind them of their worth. May they find companionship in every season, and may they grow into people who bring light and kindness to every friendship they build.
