This evening prayer for comfort and strength is written for the end of the day, when the house is quiet and the worries you carried since morning are still with you. Pray it at bedtime, in the car before you walk inside, or at the kitchen table after the dishes are done. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and details of your own day.

Evening Prayer for Comfort and Strength

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring you everything I am still holding. I bring the conversation that did not go well, the bills I keep adding up in my head, and the tiredness that sits in my shoulders and will not leave. You know which of these keep me awake. Take them from my hands tonight, because I cannot carry them through the dark and still be ready for tomorrow.

Comfort me in the places where I feel alone. If there is someone I love who is hurting, be close to them while I sleep, and let them know they are not forgotten. Give me the quiet kind of strength that does not depend on how well the day went, the strength to get up again in the morning and try once more. Teach me to rest in the truth that you do not sleep or slumber, and that you keep watch over the people I love when I cannot.

Thank you for the small mercies of this day: the warm cup, the kind word, the ordinary hours that held no disaster. Let my body rest and my mind slow down, and let me wake knowing that your faithfulness began before I did and will continue after I close my eyes. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am worn out, and tonight I give you what I cannot fix. Comfort the heart that is heavy and strengthen the hands that are tired. Keep watch over me and over the people I love while I sleep, and let me wake with enough courage for the day ahead. Thank you that I am never alone in the dark. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse lets you pray for peaceful sleep as an act of trust. Read it slowly, then ask God to help you lie down without replaying every unfinished task.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use these lines to pray for protection through the night. Name anyone who is awake with worry, and ask God to keep watch over them as well as over you.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel weighed down by the day. Bring the specific burdens you named earlier and ask Jesus to help you set them down for the night.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

This verse speaks to exhaustion. Ask God to give you strength where your own has run out, and thank him that his strength does not depend on your effort.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray these words with gratitude for God’s mercy that is new each morning. Let the verse remind you that tomorrow will bring fresh grace, even if today was hard.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed moment in your evening, such as after the lights go out or just before you brush your teeth, so the prayer becomes a habit rather than something you try to remember. Sit on the edge of your bed or stay in your favorite chair, and keep a hand open on your lap, which can help you release what you are holding. If the words feel too long on a tired night, pray the shorter version instead.

Invite someone else to pray it with you, a spouse, a friend on the phone, or a child at bedtime. Praying for comfort and strength together can make the prayer feel less like a list you read alone and more like shared trust. Many people find it helpful to pray the same words each night, so the familiar phrases become a place of rest.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep you through the night and settle your heart before you sleep. May he remind you that you are held, and may you wake to find his mercy waiting for you again.
