This is a Christian prayer for courage, written for the moments when fear is louder than faith: a difficult conversation you have been dreading, a diagnosis you are waiting to hear about, a decision that could change everything. You can pray it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own fears into your own words. It works well first thing in the morning, in the car before a hard meeting, or late at night when your mind will not settle.

Christian Prayer for Courage

Lord, I come to you because I am afraid, and I would rather be honest with you than pretend I am fine. My stomach is tight when I think about what lies ahead. I replay the what-ifs over and over, and my mind runs ahead to outcomes I cannot control. You already know the names of the people this touches, the words I am afraid to say, and the results I cannot see yet. Nothing about this is hidden from you.

Give me courage that is not based on my own strength, because I do not have enough of that today. Steady my breathing and quiet the noise in my head. Remind me that you have been faithful in every hard season I have lived through, and that you have not changed. Help me take the next small step rather than trying to carry the whole future at once. Where I need wisdom, give it. Where I need words, put them in my mouth. Where I need to let go of an outcome, help me open my hands.

Whatever happens, let me know that I am not walking alone. You are with me in this room, in this decision, and in whatever follows. I trust you with the parts of this I cannot fix. Make me brave enough to do what is right, and gentle enough to love the people in front of me while I do it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am scared right now, and I need you. Give me the courage to take the next step, not the whole road. Steady my heart and quiet my thoughts. Help me remember that you are with me in this moment, and that you will not leave me to face it alone. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a reminder of God’s command and his presence. Read it slowly, and let the words “do not be afraid” become a personal word from God to you in this specific situation.

Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

(WEB)

Use this verse to name what you fear and then declare, in prayer, who you are actually relying on. Let the question at its heart shape your next honest sentence to God.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly, pausing after each promise God makes to strengthen, help and uphold. Ask him to make one of those promises real to you before the day is over.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

When fear rises, use this verse as a short, honest prayer. Say the first half aloud, then say the second half as your decision to trust God in that moment.

2 Timothy 1:7

For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over the gifts God has already placed in you. Thank him for power, love and self-control, and ask him to help you use them where the fear is strongest.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this before a specific moment, such as a phone call, a meeting or a hospital appointment, rather than waiting until the anxiety is at its worst. Sit somewhere quiet, keep a glass of water nearby, and read the prayer slowly enough that each line has time to land. If your hands feel restless, let them rest open on your knees, which can be a physical picture of setting down what you are holding.

You can also pray this with someone you trust. Ask a friend, spouse or pastor to read the prayer aloud while you listen, or to pray over you in their own words. Sometimes courage grows most easily when someone else is standing beside you and asking God to strengthen you on your behalf.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and beside you in whatever you are facing. May he steady your heart when it trembles and give you the courage to take the next faithful step. May you rest in the knowledge that you are not alone, and that the God who has carried you this far will carry you through what comes next.
