This bedtime prayer for our nation gives you words to bring the country before God at the end of the day, when the news has been read and the house has gone quiet. Pray it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and concerns that are on your heart tonight. It works well for one person alone, for a couple at the bedside, or for a family gathered in the hallway before lights out.

Bedtime Prayer for Our Nation

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring our nation to You before I close my eyes. You know the leaders who carry decisions none of us would want to carry. Give them wisdom tonight, and let their rest be real. Keep them from pride and from fear, and let them hear the voices of people who are struggling and not only the voices of those who are loudest.

Father, I pray for the families who lie awake because the rent is due, the job is uncertain, or the medical bill has arrived. I pray for the children who are tucked in with worry they cannot name, and for the older people who are alone in quiet houses. Be near to every home where there is grief, and let Your peace settle over the places where people feel forgotten. Protect the police officers, nurses, truck drivers and teachers who will be working through the night while the rest of us sleep.

Lord, heal the divisions that grow louder every year. Soften hearts on both sides of the arguments we keep having, and remind us that every neighbor is someone You love. Watch over our borders, our cities and our small towns, and guard us from violence and from the lies that make us suspicious of one another. Let us wake tomorrow more willing to listen, more ready to help, and more grateful for the freedom we have. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, watch over our nation tonight. Give wisdom to those who lead, comfort to those who are hurting, and safety to those who are working while we rest. Keep our families close, heal what is broken between us, and let us wake with mercy in our hearts. Thank You for the gift of this land and the people in it. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you lie down, trusting that the safety of the nation does not depend on your staying awake to guard it. Ask God to give the country the same unbroken rest He gives you.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release your worries about leaders, laws and the future. Name the people in authority and ask God to be the builder and watchman over every city and institution.

1 Timothy 2:1-2

1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

(WEB)

Paul urges prayer for everyone in authority. Pray by name for the officials you know of, and for those you do not know, that they may lead with peace and godliness.

Jeremiah 29:7

Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace.”

(WEB)

This verse was written to exiles who were told to seek the welfare of their city. Pray for the good of your town and country, and ask God to show you one practical way to serve it this week.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Read this as the nation sleeps. Pray that the One who neither slumbers nor sleeps will keep watch over every home, every road and every person working through the night.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet moment after the last screen is off and before the light goes out. Sit on the edge of the bed or kneel beside it, and keep your hands open in your lap or resting on the blanket. Some people find it helps to hold a pen and write down two or three names or places as they pray, then leave the paper on the nightstand as a reminder to pray again tomorrow.

If you share a home, invite someone to pray it with you, or take turns reading the paragraphs aloud. Children can add one sentence each, naming a neighbor, a teacher or a helper they have seen. Praying together at bedtime turns a large concern for the nation into something the whole household can carry, one sleepy prayer at a time.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps Israel neither slumber nor sleep keep you and your neighbors tonight. May His peace guard your heart and your home, and may the country you love be held gently in His hands while you rest.
