This night prayer for courage and strength is for the end of the day, when the fear, worry or weariness you carried through the hours starts to press harder in the quiet. It is meant to be prayed just before you sleep, in bed or at the edge of the couch, and it can be read aloud exactly as written or used as a starting point for your own words. Take what fits your situation and leave the rest.
Night Prayer for Courage and Strength
Lord, the day is closing and I bring you what I am still holding. I have felt the weight of what is ahead, the phone call I dreaded, the decision I keep turning over, the body that feels tired before the day is even done. Some of this I can name, and some of it sits in me without words. You know all of it. Right now I ask you to take what I cannot carry tonight and to give me the courage to face tomorrow without pretending I am stronger than I am.
Be my strength in the places where I feel thin. Steady my breathing and quiet the voice that says I will fail or that I am alone with this. Remind me that you have already been in every room I will walk into tomorrow. Guard my sleep and watch over the people I love, the ones who are awake worrying about me and the ones who are far away. Let my rest be real rest, not just a pause before the next round of fear. I trust you with the night and with the morning. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am tired and I am afraid of what tomorrow asks of me. Give me enough courage for the next step and no more than I need tonight. Hold me while I sleep, keep the people I love in your care, and let my rest be restoring. Thank you that I do not have to face the dark or the day on my own. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 46:1-3
1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas; 3 though its waters roar and are troubled, though the mountains tremble with their swelling. Selah.

How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a time close to the end of the day, after the lights are low and before you reach for your phone again if you can manage it. Sit or lie in the place where you usually sleep. If your mind races, rest one hand on your chest or your stomach and breathe slowly while you pray, letting each line land before moving to the next. Many people find it helps to pray the prayer in short pieces over several nights rather than rushing through it all at once.
If you share a home or are praying for someone else, you might speak the prayer aloud together, or ask a friend or family member to pray it over you by phone or text. You can also write the prayer on a card and keep it on your nightstand, so that on a hard night the words are already there when you cannot find your own.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps watch over the day also keep watch over this night. May he give courage where fear has been loud and strength where you feel spent. May you sleep in peace, wake to a fresh morning, and know that you are held in the steady love of God.
